My 04 V6 170k has started with the rough idle at startup. Happened one day, then it was several days later and it did it again. The past week it's gone from every morning to every time it sits several hours to yesterday it did it once after sitting an hour.
Vehicle has never overheated on me or even warm and the PO was anal about maintenance, he took it to the dealer for everything from oil changes to tires to replacing bulbs to irritating wind noise. I've towed with it a few times, but mostly it's a DD.
My son (mechanic) looked at it last night, code was the usual #6 misfire. Took out plugs and coils from 6 and 2. Plug #6 the ceramic part was kind of blackened and the side electrode was noticeably whiter than the other. He's got a kit you stick in the radiator to test for exhaust gas. We tried that but there was no indication of a problem and the overflow tank looks good. I'm going to mark the level in it and keep an eye on it. Oil looks clean and free of anything unusual. We swapped the coil and plug when we put it back together, then reset the code to see if it moves or not.
Of course, this morning it started fine, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. I'm hoping it is just old plugs as they've been in there a long time or something simple, but of course I'm a bit worried.
