Vents don't blow on low settings

Just bought a 2000 4runner. The vents don't appear to work on the lowest setting above off. All of the higher settings seem to work ok.

Might be the fan motor/resistor that are failed. When the fan motor ages and draws too much current, it burns out the blower motor control resistor. The resistor is cheap, about $20 but it will blow again if you dont replace the blower motor. Blower is $45-$90.

Probably a blown resister. There is a littke 4 way resister that controls motor speed that is mounted on a vent pipe under the passenger dash (well thats where it was on my old taco) the resistors are cooled by the air in the pipe. The lowest setting always burns out first as it gets the hottest. Cheap and easy fix. If you can find it. Remove it (one screw) and take it into dealer to order a new one if you can see one of the resister coils is broken.

[Edit] /me Jinxes Dr Coffee Also, when I had mine burn out I think it was just from age, like a light bulb burning out. Or maybe from offroading with it on low and mechanically breaking. I replaced mine and it's still going today 10 years later (Gave my old truck to a friend who still drives it). [/edit]

Good to know, mine has done the same thing since I bought it. It just never bothered me enough to look into it, or at least I always had more pressing problems to deal with first.
