Alright guys I just bought my wife a 2001 Limited 2wd and to say the least it has some issues. Ive spend the last few months working out most of the kinks and previous owner issues. Its a 2001 Toyota 4Runner Limited 2wd 3.4l V6 Auto Trans.
I have a few codes that pop up every once in a while which are P0420 and P0441 I do have a small exhaust leak at the catalytic converter flange and I was attributing the codes to that for now, but haven't ruled that out completely as they come on and can be cleared and stay off for a good while till they pop back on.
So to get down to the bones of the post, when the runner is started all lights come on on the cluster and go off as they should. You can sit there all day and as long as its not in gear you will get no lights, as soon as you put it in any gear and move a few feet the Trac Off Light comes on and stays on until the vehicle is shut off. Havent tried to lose control too wild, but as far as I can tell the light is on but the system is functioning fine. Have no codes relating to anything trac related as far as I can tell.
The main issue which may or may not be related is a terrible 1st to 2nd gear shift. It gets slightly better at times when more throttle is given and seems worse at low speed however sometimes its harsh either way. Shifts the same way whether or not OD or the ECT power button is pushed and shifts the same in 2nd and if you manually start in 1st and shift into 2nd as well. Now every other gear is smooth as glass. No jerking, jarring or hunting. I have dropped the pan 3 times, replaced fluid and filter. I have also tested all shift solenoids and they tested good, I replaced them anyway with brand new solenoids. I also tested the SLT solenoid and it tested fine. I know ohm range on it was 5-5.4 and it tested out at 6.5 ohms. After talking to my father in law who is a master diag. tech he doesn't think the extra ohm would cause the issue. I have another transmission that I'm about to go through and prepare to go in on the hopes that it takes care of the issue, just looking for advice or hoping that I'm not crazy lol.
