Vibrating heat shield driving me nuts!

I've been underneath more than once and I cannot find the source of this aggravating tinny noise that comes on around 1700rpm. There are 2 heat shields along the exhaust on the pass side and they are sound - I've looked up around the starter and can't find a thing. Advice appreciated!

Had this same annoying issue for a while and then got up under my truck and actually hit my head on one of my cats and then heard the noise. The shrouds on the cats looked fine but the small welds on them had broken off and was causing the noise. When you get a chance get underneath and knock on them a few times to see if you here anything or feel around to see if the heat shields aren't fully on there. But the noise I had came right around 1700rpm. I guess the vibrations are just right to piss you off at that rpm haha

Exactly same issue with mine...the top shield lifted right off once I found it. No more annoying tinny rattle.

I knocked on the cats with a wrench and heard nothing - I'd already taken them off (the heat shields) and replaced the screws that hold the 2 halves together. Maybe I need to remove them and do some more knocking.

You mentioned passenger side shields. There is some shielding down the rear of the motor more on the passenger side exhaust that I had to cut off as it was corroded and rattling.

I have been trying to find one of these for 2 years. Still annoys me, never have found the source. Mine sounds like it might be internal to the bell housing as in clutch components but in 50,000 km it has not gotten any worse. I'll check that out when the clutch needs attention, not before.

Does it go away when you press the clutch? If so dry throw out bearing on the clutch. K ind of normal sound.

That's good news. I have an auto with the same symptoms (presumably - rattle at 2000, 3000, 4000, worse when cold). I was worried it might be a cracked flexplate, but your manual doesn't have one! Mine has been rattling for almost 50,000 miles, so it's probably not too serious. And I've checked everything under the truck, and replaced the bolts on the converter heat shield. I'm thinking the guts in the cat are rattling, but hope not.

It's the cats on mine too, only rattle for a minute or two until it heats up then goes away. I found mine really quickly a month ago, just tapped on the shields when it was cold, sounded like a tin can full of nuts and bolts.

You mentioned passenger side shields. There is some shielding down the rear of the motor more on the passenger side exhaust that I had to cut off as it was corroded and rattling.

I was surprised to see that the exhaust pipe from the drivers side passes behind the engine and over to the pass side where it joins onto that pipe - I thought there might be a shield behind the motor someplace but I was not able to locate it. I have the service manual and a Haynes book - I'll have to look a little closer....

Have you checked your O2 sensors? I had one come loose once and it made a similar rattle to what you're describing.

Try knocking with a dead blow hammer or rubber mallet, that way you're not just hearing metal on metal contact with the wrench. You will find the squeak faster and your ears will thank you.

I just use a wooden piece of some kind, like a hammer handle that broke off at the neck. You can get a better percussion in a small swing space because it is lighter. In any case, don't use metal as gamefreakgc suggests.
