Vibration and odd sound at 50mph

I actually had the needle bearing replacement done yesterday.
It made a world of difference in the sound (gone) and vibration (gone). I had to prove it a tech with a ride. He noticed it right away. Had him put it in 4hi and asked him if he still felt/heard the vibration - he didn't - Pointed out the TSB (there is rev that includes '16 & '17 models). The parts had to be ordered.

Yeah, same here. I took the TSB with me today, had a service manager drive it so he could feel/hear it. Sure enough, needle bearings were to blame. Three hours later and I’m enjoying a smooth ride again.

I would advise anyone who suspects this issue in their truck to have a tech drive it and have the TSB with you. I had the .pdf version on my phone...worked just great.

How did they know it was the needle bearings? Did they do any further diagnosis after they experienced it?

I had 2 identical 05 tacomas at different times. One had a bad vibe just under load around 45-50 and the other was smooth as could be. it was a pretty well discussed topic on tacomaworld on second gen trucks. Some did it and some didn't. I recall torque converters being replaced on a few trucks to fix it. On one of those trucks I did about a 2 inch lift and had the needle bearing issue afterwards. I replaced it with one of those bushings from east coast gear supply and it was never an issue again. Apparently a lot of guys changed the needle bearings every 6 months or so before those bushings came out. Just one more reason I'm seriously thinking I'll leave my 4Runner alone. Once you start messing with the suspension it just snowballs.

4th Gens have a similar issue referred to as the "rumble strip" vibration. There are a lot of differing opinions on the source, but for me resetting my ECU seemed to do the trick. This was the only maintenance I did to troubleshoot and it worked for me; 30k ago and never returned.

Had my TSB repair done yesterday and it made a huge difference. The groan and vibration is completely gone. Very happy.

Additionally was give a Highlander as a loaner and i’m a big fan. Such a quiet comfortable ride.

Since this dates back to 2004 models, I wonder if better needle bearing is being used, or if the same, and if failure could occur again, if same?

I don't know but they ordered the parts in the TSB and I'm serious when I say the entire ride of the truck has improved at any speed, in any gear.

Very happy I had this done........but I seriously may trade it in for a Highlander or Passport (still need to check that out in a couple of months) at some point. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed a much smoother, quieter, comfortable, and competent ride.......ugh, such statements are making me show my age .

I agree - what an improvement. I had this done a week ago. I forgot how nice it was before all the rumbling started. On another note - I also got a Highlander as a loaner while the work was being done. It was loaded with all the whizzbangs they now put on the limited. It was a great improvement over the 2006 limited highlander my wife had and now my daughter drives. I was impressed. Again it might be the age thing.

Thank you for posting, I have the same vibration at 40 mph, in 2WD but not 4WD while coasting. I've been searching for an explanation to this and will be calling the dealer tomorrow to set up an appointment.

Update:
After having the front diff replaced on my 2017 Limited, the droning/vibration issue still exists

The tech drove it again this week and said he notices it as well and now thinks its coming form the rear and may replace the rear pinion seals?? I could be wrong on that. Taking it in again next week.

Thoughts folks? I feel like the dealer is taking shots in the dark on this, sort of concerning to me.

Maybe a strange question and I don't mechanically understand the front diff and its components, but I assume replacing the front diff included a needle bearing roller. If so, might the needle bearing roller that comes with the new front diff kit still be the earlier problematic one and not the new one that you get specifically with the T-SB-0026-15 parts kit?

I really hope you get this resolved because it made a world of difference for me after the needle bearing roller was replaced.

Unfortunately mine is the limited model therefore it’s full time 4wd and has different front diff. The tsb is not for limited models.

Here is the link to the Updated TSB to included the 16 & 17 models. My dealer blamed the tires and also noted the earlier TSB only went up to 15. I emailed Toyota directly to complain the same parts on earlier models went unchanged for 16. My dealer could have cared less, I'm some what doubtful they even test drove it.

Now the fear is will the new parts be the same bad parts or do I do the EGS bushing fix. Curious how many have done the EGS and what is the long term outcome on that.

My 2017 SR5 with 30K is going back to Toyota for a second needle bearing replacement. Curious if the issue is the needle bearing or where it sits in the front diff? The TSB says Toyota will replace needle bearing for 60K/5yrs but at what point do they stop replacing the bearings and fix the root of the problem? I'll ask and report.
