Vibration at 60-70 MPH Solved

Happy to report that I have solved my vibration which was occurring between 60-70 mph. Thanks to the information on previous posts, our 4Runner's wheels are lug-centric and not hub-centric (as I would've guessed they were).

I told my local Discount Tire about the issue after they had "balanced" and rotated them last week. I requested that they use the Haweka (fingers or flange adapter) when balancing them today. The sales guy at the front was pretty sure they were hub-centric and didn't need it, but agreed to do it.

I also talked to the service tech that was doing the balancing and verified that he was using the flange. When I got the keys back, another tech went over the results and noted that some were a few ounces out of balance. Had them inflate to 35 psi and was on my way.

Took it for a test drive and it's so much better, nice and smooth with no more steering wheel shake.

I'm getting to the point where I need get a proper balance. I was thinking of anteing up for a Hunter RoadForce at a dealership. Can I try a cheapy one and just tell them "Lug-centric flange" and they'll know?

Discount Tire has the Hunter Road Force after looking on the hunter website. The difference is the Haweka adapter or fingers. Better yet show them a picture of the adapter. If they don’t use it, they will just be relying on the hub to center the rim on the machine which isn’t precise enough, since the lugs are what is used to center the rim on the vehicle.

all of my local DT stores have the "fingers" so I'd think other DTs should have them too but the kids may not know to use them!
