Vibration is driving me crazy!

Hey folks. I am chasing down a vibration currently that happens between 60 and 70 mph. It’s somewhat feels like I am driving on a rumble strip just not quite as bad. It is not a shimmy like a tire out of balance. I have literally replaced all of my suspension components in the front including CV axles and have also done new u joints And made sure everything in the driveline is properly lubricated. I am starting to run out of options for things to check. Has anyone had this sort of issue before?

I’m chasing down this exact situation. I can not figure it out and one shop hasn’t had any luck figuring it out so I’m at a loss.

Have either of you had the drive shaft inspected/looked at for being out of balance, most if not all driveshafts have a weight/bit of metal welded on it to balance it, similar to how a tire is balanced, if that weight has broken off it could result in the issue you describe.

Mine still has the weight welded on and I just did new u joints yesterday. Might have to take it to a driveline shop and see if maybe it got bent or lost a weight somewhere else that I didn’t notice.

My F150 did something similar. In that case it was two things; corroded lines for the trans cooling lines leaking fluid and there was an ignition coil going bad that showed itself until certain loads but never threw a code.

Hmm those are two things I hadn’t thought of. Might have to check that out. Did it do it under the same load at different speeds or just at a certain speed?

It generally happened between 45-65 mph or that was at least when it was most pronounced. A vibration or a stutter. These things can be difficult to pin down because sometimes they only happen under certain loads or within certain harmonic ranges. LOL. It's like tuning a guitar or bringing a multi-engine airplane to all be in sync with one another. You just know when it isn't there.

Its the brake rotors! i have heard this multiple times. Take it to a honest brake shop and check if they are warped. That should do it.

I guess that could be! Might just swap out the rotors for new ones and see if that fixes it.

I'm having the same problem. took it the a hunter road force balance, than I was told that my tires were old, I replace them, the problem still there. the mechanic looked under checked the drive shaft and didnt find anything.
The funny thing is today I drove 1:20 hr I hit 53mph for about 3 min and about 10 min later I was doing 60 min for about 4 min. and the entire trip no vibration

My experience today says check you don't have a sticking caliper!

At 30mph roll-off it felt like something was off with the transmission (Shudder) or driveshaft

I'm wondering about that stuck caliper theory. I've changed u-joints, inner bearing to the tighter aftermarket one (OEM was fine when I pulled it out), new CV and hub w/bearings. I also had to replace the ABS wiring harness since the caliper fell off the hanger and broke the line when I did the CV/bearings. The odd thing is it sometimes goes away and it seems that at low speed if I put it in 4HI the vibration is less. I have never played with the calipers other than checking the pads and rotor thickness. I also serviced the transmission just in case. Nothing has gotten rid of that vibration.

That weird for sure. Mine always does it under load between 50-60 mph

- Does it stop if you let off the gas?
- Do you feel it through your steering wheel or seat?
- have you rotated the tires?

My rear caliper shudder went away when I braked. The piston must have seized at just the right place to create shudder when not in used. At higher speeds I guess it was 'over-powered' and not noticeable. Just feel your brake rotors straight after you stop, try and coast to a halt. At 60mph a sticky caliper will result in a scorching hot rotor (Still got the blister :biggrin1

At least it's something you can rule out in 10 seconds if it isn't a caliper.
