Vibration issue

Hey All,

I'm looking for help, getting very frustrated with the issue at hand.

2014 SR5, vibration in my steering wheel, and entire vehicle at just over 85kmh.

I purchased stock size dura tracks and dick cepek torque wheels in May. Have had the vibration ever since.

Took the truck back to store, they rebalanced, said it was good. Drove it home in town, wife took it to work the next day on the highway, still vibrating. Took it back in, they told me the tires are balanced, just feeling road noise. I insisted on a test drive, the owner finally sent a tech with me, within 3 km he admitted there was a wobble/vibration. I made mention that it felt like a time I had hub centric issues on my Audi, he checked the truck and said I had the wrong lug nuts on the truck and they would need to order me the proper ones. That was the start of June. Told me 2-3 weeks.

It took me until early July to get back to the shop. Luckily we didn't need the 4R as we have other vehicles. And they took the truck and tried a bunch of centric rings, but didn't have the right size. Told they ordered the right size and same story, 2-3 weeks.

This time I give them 2 weeks and go back in. The owner informs me that he can't find the spec for the centre bore or the hub anywhere so I need to bring the truck in. I make the comment that they were already ordered, but that falls on def ears. Took truck in, following day, I pick it up and I ask for the measurements, he rhymes of "something like 4.31" and 4". And he now has his supplier looking to see if those even exist.

I go online, find the proper specs, call a tire shop in a big city, and have them set aside for me.

I just installed them on the weekend, they fit snug in the rim and nicely on the hub. Retorqued and took the truck for a ride.

I still have the vibration! Not as bad, but it's there. I'm doubtful they put the correct lugs on, could that cause an issue? Would I feel an unbalanced tire on the back? It vibrates enough that the back seats vibrates. I'm really tired of my new truck being parked because it frustrates us. I'm planning on taking it to another shop to have the wheels balanced and checked, I'm going off the original shops word that they are balanced, but I doubt them now. I washed the wheels when I had them off on the weekend.

Any help would be amazing. My wife has been gone a month, and I don't really want to hear her complain when she gets home Wednesday, helppppp me please

Some aftermarket wheels take conical lugs or spherical lugs. But check with the wheel manufacture to be certain. It is possible you still have the wrong lugs which could possibly cause the vibration.

Now for hub bore you can get adapters to make the wheels fit right and it sounds like you have that part taken care of.

So my bet is the wheels are ever so slightly off balance. I went through that with a past car and have the wheels and tires rebalanced numerous times. I would get the wheels and tires balanced one more time.

Only other thing that you did not mention which could happen is you have a wheel or more that is not round, same might go for the tire too. Now I am sure that is rare but I have seen it on other vehicle forums.

I would recommend finding a shop that has a Road Force balance machine and knows how to use it. There are multiple issues that could be going on here. With a Road Force balancer, and someone that knows how to use it and will take the time to check everything, you can eliminate some of the possibilities and hopefully find a fix.

I'm guessing there is an issue with one or more of your tires. I've seen several GY tires that have weak or busted belts inside the tire causing the tire to bounce like it's out of balance. I've also seen GY's that spin on the wheel and move the heavy spot around. Mark the rim and tire to check for that.

I had some aggressive vibration issues when I got my Duratracs, Discount tire was unable to fix the issue so I located the Road Force GSP9700 at one of the local Toyota dealers and though it took a little over 1.5 hours, they got my tires perfectly balanced. Truly a night and day difference. Check out one of them in your area at the link I've provided above.

Thanks for the input.

I had the truck into the tire shop, but they couldn't find anything wrong. One tech tried to tell me that a shake in the wheel was normal and his pickup truck did it. I told him it wasn't normal for me.

I finally got the owner to come with me and it took a bit of driving, but he admitted there was something wrong with the front end. So I now have 2 more tires coming in for the truck and should have them on tomorrow.

Recommendation: have them turn the wheel 180 on the cones after they balance it, then spin it again to verify.

Just return the wheels and tires to the shop and ask for a refund. Go back to stockers problem fixed!!!! I had the same problem with my tacoma after several rebalances and stuff discount tire took the wheel n tires back put my stockers back and gave me a full refund. Gotta love discount tire customer service.

You mean on the balancer?

Two new tires installed on the front. Went into the tire shop and the owner just shook his head an said the problem is still there.

I have taken the stock rims over to the shop for them to swap those tires onto them. Then from there we will see if the issue goes away.

He is thinking that these the characteristics of these tires are causing the vibration, and there isn't much I can do.

I did find out they are the p-metric tires, because when I purchased them, we don't plan on carrying anything heavy, so I told them we didn't need the thick sidewalls....I didn't know at that time though that there was a lighter weight tire available.

I am really getting ready to get rid of this whole package, but I don't have the stock tires anymore, only the rims, so I am guessing we will be ending up in a less aggressive tire before the end of the week.

Yes.

Toyota's have a 106mm hub. Not sure what the bore is on those wheels, as they don't list it on their web site, but you'll want rings to convert from whatever their center bore is to 106mm. You'll also want to have conical lug nuts, as opposed to the flat washer type that come from Toyota.

Thanks, I found the centre bore of the wheel to be 110mm and the rings have been installed.

The tire shop worked with me, brought in a smoother rolling tire, put that on my stock tires, took about an ounce of weight to balance them and the vibration was gone.

Then put those tires on the dick cepek wheels and they needed 4 ounces of weight and the vibration came back.

I decided to stick with these new tires he put on, and they are crediting me back for the wheels and I'm getting a set of studded winters for now and I will venture into the world of custom wheels again in the spring, since snow is just around the corner.

like stated before, Duratracs are VERY HARD to balance.. had mine done many times and got it close enough to where i can deal with what little vib i get now.. did they mount the tire properly? red dot opposing the valve stem?

on a side note, there used to be a thread (i cant find it) that people would post their wheels and what specs they were to help others out and im pretty sure i posted the center bore measurement to the T.
