vibration when i let off gas ?

Got the Grease Gun, Lithum Grease, Moly Lithum Grease, and two kids meals yesterday. Got under the truck and found nothing (fittings). But I did find some new issues! I'm leaking engine oil from somewhere behind or underneath. It looks like I need Gaskets (Majorly). Oil pan, Valve covers, Tranny pan, and maybe the gasket a little lower then midway of the engne ( i think maybe the Head Gasket?). Great, new find to add to the list. Better off finding it now then later i guess. Thanks again for the information.
 
Time to start tackling projects! No sir not the head gasket, if it was you would have more problems. ie: running conditions, oil mixing with coolant, white smoke clouds, and or over heating issues.

Just time to replace seals it sounds like. Also for the oil pan gasket do not get aftermarket cork gaskets. Goto Toyota and get some FIPG (black) to seal up the pan
 
Thanks for the extra information. Good to know that its not that serious. You mentioned Seals, you are talking about the Rear Main Seal correct? I have looked into that also, kinda looks complicated taking it apart. FIPG thats sealant, correct? The Tranny pan was tighten too tight when they installed the Tranny itself. New gasket but it was tighten so much that the gasket itself comes out where the bolts were torqued. IDIOTS! Theres also a line that goes into the Tranny Pan itself, i think its metal. Well the flange/ washer thing around it leaks fluid around it. Is that replaceable?

Yes rear main seal. FIPG (Form in place gasket) Yes that is a sealant. Time for a trans pan gasket. That line may have a copper crush washer if so you can order one at the dealer. I'm honestly not sure as I have a 5spd man. transmission. :) But if it is the crush washer it is replaceable.

You're probably talking about the dipstick tube. You're going to need to take the pan off to fix that if it's leaking I believe.
 
Dunno how much they charge yet but will soon. Found some Dana Spicer U-Joints with servicable fittings. But it turned out to be only for 2nd Gen Toys. Dang it! Gotta keep looking. lol

kball: I tried taking it off from the outside but it didn't flinch. I'll add that to my list of Maintenance goodies. Thanks
 
I was wondering if you ever figured out if it was the u joints or the bearings. I just got a 2000 4runner that my sister gave me and I'm having the same issues among others. Right when I hit 60 i begin to also hear a humming type of noise. Thought it was the tires so I replaced them but still hearing the noise. Hoping to have my mechanic take a look at it this coming weekend.
 
stradlin, my toy is in the shop now, i first had new u joints, new tires, and an alignment, and i could still feel the vibration and hear the humming noise, my mechanic said something about the yoke was the problem and he was also gonna have the driveshaft balanced. should be ready any day now, i will let u know if my problem is solved .
 
ok stradlin, talked to my mechanic yesterday and he took the driveshaft to a machine shop to have it balanced, the guy at the machine shop said the inside of the drivehsaft has a rubber lining or something and the rubber was worn out. he said you could see it vibrating on the balancing machine, so the machinist is gonna replace the rubber with steel, anyone ever heard of this with the 4r drive shafts?
 
Thanks a lot Kenny. I took the 4runner yesterday to the mechanic and he told me they removed the driveshaft and that the yoke and u joints were worn out and needed replacing. I should probably call him and tell him about the rubber lining.
 
hey stradlin, i had the front and rear u joints already replaced in my 4runner about 2 months ago, and my mechanic said there was another u joint that had play in it, i guess this other u joint is the middle of the driveshaft or something, and he also did say something about a yolk too, supposed to get my 4r back tomorrow, and hopefully the vibration is gone.
 
Referring to page two dialog, dont race to diagnose a leaky rear main. Check your valve covers first on the outside back passenger corner. The tilt of the motor makes it look like a rear main with the way the oil runs off the back side when its a VC gasket leaking. Thus was the case with mine.
 
Has anyone picked up their Runner and experienced the "END" ?


I called a local shop and they'll do it for under $200. Bought to go order some Precision U-Joints at the parts store for under $40. Got a friend that'll do the job for $50. So, a total of $90 (not including grease gun/grease). Will keep ya'll posted!

Alright so I bought two U-Joints($20) 1 week ago. Had another friend put them on ($30). He also said the front U-Joint was the worst and the rear one needed to be removed by a machine...i don't know. I take it that they were the factory U-Joints.

He also stated that, when balancing the driveshaft, they put weights on it to balance it. Is this true?

"97 SR5 2WD" I'm sorry...the new one's are with the fittings as well (Advance Auto).
