Vinyl wrap on hood

[MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] has been running 3M vinyl on his hood for quite a while now (2 years??) last time this question was brought up he was very positive on how it's holding up.

Mine is still holding up very well. I'm surprised that the wrinkles that I have haven't dried up and cracked yet. IIRC they 3M stuff was suppose to last 7-8 years.
The only thing bad I've come to notice is the matte color really shows any sort of debris. Pollen was real bad here this year and my hood was YELLOW for a while. Nothing really to complain about though just me being picky.

It is very durable doesn't rip or tear.
Gets pin stripes just like the black plastic TE pieces but not quite as bad.
Has held up to Texas heat just fine.
Been 2 1/2 years and haven't taken it off yet but don't expect anything unusual when I do change it out as 3M is a pretty reputable company. As stated the black shows dirt/dust/pollen alot more then the silver and I sometimes just wipe the hood down.
With two people it's apparently fairly easy to do yourself (the 3M). There have been several threads with how-to's and pictures.
However, the cost will be higher than $20.- I think $150 is on the high end on eBay. $35 on the low end.

I didn't find it as "easy" as some others mentioned, but maybe I just had two left hands. I think I paid $80 for my 3M 1080 Matte Black sheet from Amazon.
I also got quoted almost 500 to wrap the hood, and for a price like that I would prefer just to paint it.

hood wrap
had a tree branch and limbs land on my hood in VA shortly after install only had a small scratch to the vinyl looks great. It red right now cause of the dust out here in UTAH. off roading on my way to Alaska!

Took me an afternoon and and probably 2.5 cans. It definitely wasn't perfect, but it was my first time truly spraying anything that was worth making look nice, and the conditions in my garage weren't perfect that day. All in all, it looked great and I got a ton of compliments on it. Had it on the trails for a long day of romping around and it held up great to both that, and the pressure washer at the end of the day. It's off now, but thats the beauty of it. I can spray and peel my hood a couple dozen times for the cost of a good wrap job.

You can get a piece of the good 3M vinyl big enough to do the hood with some left over for about $50......3M 1080 Scotchprint Matte Black Car Wrap Vinyl Film 5ft x 7ft 35SQ Ft | eBay
The key is to use the 3M primer 94 with a sponge brush all along the back side 1/4" seam of the hood so it remains stuck good and doesn't lift at the edges.
When your applying it use a heatgun and felt squeegee and start in the very back of the middle of the hood and work forward and outward. Just peeling off the backing in about 6-8 inch sections across at a time from underneath and working it forward with a squeegee and heat gun.Peel off 6-8" more and work it forward again and repeat til it's off the front.
Then when it's all on ,do a rough trim to a couple of inches and then fold it up under and use the hood seam as a line to trim it with an exacto knife cutting straight out at the 4 corners and folding it under and the primer 94 makes it really stick and stay stuck. Then I went back over the edges on the backside of the hood lightly with the primer 94 and sponge brush to seal it.

Antman and I wrapped my hood with 1080. It looked great, but if you don't apply it in an extremely professional manner, it starts to look like crap. Every place where we had to stretch it a little ended up being a different shade after a while, and I also couldn't get certain smudges off it. I wish I had the same results as others here, it looks great and is actually useful.

I bet the the second time would be alot easier for you.
I practiced, aka screwed up, on a bunch of interior parts first which are alot harder with all the compound curves so the hood was easy for me because it is relatively flat in comparison. I did learn to get bird crap off it as fast as you can cause it will leave a faint stain in a matter of hours. I'd like to do the matte silver or light gray 3M maybe next time so dust/dirt doesn't show so much.

i did this to the hood last weekend and couldnt be happier. a word to the wise - get a total of three people to do this. two to stretch it each way out from the center and the third (you) to start with the squeegee (sp?). i had a buddy of mine help and he charged me a lot more beer than originally expected - that being said, he also has huge lats now so i guess he came out even...:whoo:

Where do you get this stuff? The Plastidip.
I picked it up at Lowe's, but just about any major hardware store with a spray paint section should have it. Or you can go online. dipyourcar.com is a popular resource

FYI on the plastidip. it attracts dirt. expect to have water spots/mud residue where the plastidip is. its like you can never keep it clean in my experience.
