Viper remote start install

Hey everyone, I just bought a viper 4806v remote starter for my 4Runner and am going to install it this weekend. My main question is what wires do I HAVE to hook up for
Remote start
Lock
Unlock
Rear window

I am confident in installing the remote start as I have a broad electrical background, but I don't want to waste time hooking up unnecessary wires. Thanks for the help!

Hey Foxtrot!

Did you have to use a module to bypass the transponder when you installed your 4806v in your '06 4R? Were you able to get your rear window to work on the Aux button? How do you like the 4806v?

I'd like to hear which module you used as well foxtrot and if and how you hooked up your rear window.

I'm going to be installing a 4806v in my '07 in the next little while.

For 1true34runner or anyone else reading this I confirmed and figured out all of the details about how to install this in an '07 but should apply to any '06 to '09 and for the most part '03 to '05. Check out this thread at the12volt.com for the specifics.

I ended up taking it to a friends shop because I ran out of time, I'll look tomorrow at the module. Honestly, for all my future vehicles I'll be installing compusstar. I put a compustar in my wife's Corolla and it works great, and has lots of options. The viper will only work within about 2000 feet, and only if there isn't anything in the way. Viper said they don't guarntee distances... Pretty dissapointing

I'm fine with the Viper's range so far, I can start my truck from inside the building at work while the truck is 1/2 mile away. I never expected a full mile since I used to work in marketing and realize that bogus claims are the norm.

I paid a lot of money and the installer didn't even customize the programming. The only thing he told me was that he might not be able to make the back window work. He didn't inform me about programming options or features available.

I wish I had read everything about Compustar before I settled on Viper.

I tried installing my Viper, ended up not sure enough about a couple things, and bartered for a guy to finish it. He said I'd need to add a module to run the rear window with my remote, meh.

My Viper works from inside a steel building at least 1000 feet, and from a bus at O'Hare well over 2000 feet away. Most guys with factory remote starters have to go to a window in sight of their car as close as possible to get theirs to work, I'd say my Viper is amazingly good on range.

I guess I'm comparing the range to my wife's compustar, they are both 1 mile range, but yet I can start her car way further than I can start mine. Also, the two way only works half the time, usually I'll just get a buzzing sound meaning the signal didn't reach my 4Runner. Yet when I walk out, it's running. They told me that there is no way to get the rear window to roll down... Not sure I believe that

I have an Avital remote start/alarm (same thing as Viper) on my 4th gen and a Compustar remote start/alarm on my 5th gen. The Compustar blows away the Avital on range and I don't even have the long range remotes. I also have the Drone Mobile with the Compustar so really the range is unlimited. FWIW, Viper sells Smart Start which is similar.

I didn't hook up either 4runner to roll the windows down with the remotes. I don't really roll the windows down anyway.

Is that where you hit the start button then pull your key out and it keeps running? Mine worked when I first had in installed, but I had some trouble with remote starting, it would start then shut down repeatedly until the battery died. Not good in an O'Hare employee lot. My installer changed the software mode and it has worked well since, but no more leaving it running.

Gearshift in park, apply parking brake, foot off brake pedal, press RS button on remote (all the LEDs light up for me), remove key (this is when it turns off for me), rob bank, return, drive away laughing maniacally.

You don't have to apply the parking brake unless you have to do that to remote start it anyways. I put mine in park, press the remote start button and give it about 5 seconds or listen for the parking light relays to click on. Then remove key. If the remote start works so should this.

What model remote start do you have. Its been a while since I installed a viper professionally but I have installed a few hundred of them and will help however I can.

OMG IT WORKS! You have no idea how excited I am about this! No more forgetting about the parking brake after failed attempts (twice I did this and once was at the bank). No more restarting the truck after I get out! Thank you Hoggy!

The directions in the manual were for a manual transmission, I suppose.

I assume that in order for the Temp Request function to work, temp reporting must have been enabled by the installer.

1) Passive locking - your opinion? It was not enabled by my installer but I'm intrigued.
2) How can I keep my truck from unlocking all the doors when I put it in park? Is that a Toyota dealer thing, a Viper thing, or something I can change?
3) How can I fix it so one unlock press unlocks the driver's door only and the second press unlocks the remaining doors?
4) Remote start safelock - good idea?
5) Bitwriter only options - do you know what they are?

I'm looking at hooking up a system of my own, what did you guys do with the neutral safety switch? I've got a writeup saying it needs to be hooked up to the unit through a toggle switch, yet others just hook it up to ground. How'd you guys do it?

1) I think passive arming would be a nuisance because it arms the alarm 30 seconds after the last door is closed, but that doesn't mean the doors are locked. This could lead to accidentally setting the alarm off at inconvenient times. Plus, I'm not aware of a way not to arm the alarm if its in passive mode.

2) If it is locking and unlocking based on gear selection, then that is a the vehicle doing that and not the alarm. I can tell you how to disable the alarm from doing that if it is doing it as well.

3) The vehicle wiring dictates how that works and in the case of the 4 runner, it is using the vehicle lock switch wires which lock and unlock the doors with a single pulse. In short, there is no simple way to do this, but it is definitely possible. I'll be installing a remote start/keyless on the 2007 sport I just bought soon and can look into this as it may not be terrible difficult.

4) I don't think I would like safelock. I can tell you how to program it if you like.

5) Bitwriter allows you to adjust runtime from 1-60 minutes instead of the 12,24,60 options, diesel start options, and fine tuning of virtual tach. It also appears you can lockout the programming menus with the bitwriter. I've never used on though because I never found anything that useful and I'm good at running through the sequences.
