Viper Remote Start question

i have a buddy from work that has a 2004 4Runner and he had a viper 791 w\ remote start put in. now i had a question about the immobilizer.. he was told that he needed to leave a copy of the key in a module so that the remote start could operate correctly. i was wondering if this was true that i really needed to leave a key in a module inside the dash for the remote start to diasble the immobilizer and start the car?

My friend has a 2003 Acura TL-S & she had Remote Start.

She just broke the key part on her Spare Key & put the key head in her ignition box.

This way it'll bypass the Immoblizer & if someone gets in hold of her key head, still can't crack the engine.

Thats a good idea, never thought of breaking off the keyed end.

I think the engine still can be cranked if transponder portion of the key is inside, just like a tradition vehicle without an immobilizer since it's defeated by having the transponder key in the car, unless there's also an aftermarket alarm with starter-kill. With knowledge on how to hot-wire a car, that TL-S still can be driven away.

I haven't kept up or looked at aftermarket alarm solutions. But I believe the only way it would be safe is if the transponder code is programmed/recorded into the actual remote start unit. And only if the a remote start command is received, the transponder code is sent to the vehicle's ignition system to bypass the immobilizer.

Experiment:
I've yet to try this, but if you have a non-immobilizer key like a cheapie spare key for the door locks only, put that into the ignition and hold your transponder key next to it. If you can fire up the engine, then even cutting off the teeth portion of the key won't stop the vehicle from being stolen traditionally by breaking the ignition lock. It just makes a little more difficult for the thief to find the key and putting it into the ignition and drive away.

My two cents, unless I'm missing something else in the picture and scenerio.

id really rather not destroy a key that would cost over $100 to replace. lol

i wonder if anyone here has remote start

the way that you describe things in great detail really make me believe that you will be president. lol and ive kinda been afraid to do that because of the no hold starter, if the key does not work and it keeps trying to start and wont stop because the key is wrong..i dont wanna burn up my starter or anything.

I have the Automate AM9 remote start that requires no key in the ignition box. Was $399 installed.

http://www.automatecarsecurity.com/products/2way.asp

It's actually pretty cool...the remote lets you know if someone is actually trying to break into your truck, tells you if someone smashed your window, tells you the temperature inside the truck and a lot of other goodies.

Hope this helps.

I have a 791 installed on my 4R and I had to give them an extra key to install in the dash, I gave them the valet key to use in the dash so that my spare was the regular key. They also custom programmed the FOB unit for me, so that I can put the rear window up and down via the remote.

$150 sounds like a very good deal for the 791. I would find out about the install price if you are not doing it yourself.

Some misc things to remember.

1. If you lose/break the remote FOB unit it is around $100 to replace it.
2. The little sucker burns through a battery about every 3 weeks, so I keep a package of batteries in my car.

Besides that I it has been a great unit for me.

Are you using the stock remote? Thanks.

and with the batteries. wow, thats not good. but it does have a battery gauge right?

Good questions about replacing the remote with a 4 button vs LCD if you ever lose it, I am not sure on that. Good to hear the prices have come down a little on a replacement remote, if I do lose mine or break it.

Does the 4 button give you two way feedback? What I mean is the LCD shows you if your car started if you can't see the car. The little exhaust icon will display letting me know the car is actually running.

There is a battery gauge, I usually replace it when it gets down to 1 bar left.

Love the remote start though, in the winter when I pull into my garage, I put a dryer vent hose over the exhaust that runs to the wall of my garage and out a dryer vent. Allows me to warm my car up without having to open the garage door (security risk).

I have done alot of remote starts for customers i did one on my wifes 04 v8 limited for her last year works great i use bulldog remote starters http://www.bulldogsecurity.com rs82-1 and there 791 bypass which reqs. a key inside the module i just get the customers valet key very simple install as its only a starter not a alarm it can be wired into your factory remote just have to find the unlock wire out of the body control that way all you do is unlock the vehicle 3 times and it starts no other keyfobs needed the only drawback is you can only cut it off by the supplied remote or once you get it you tap the brake pedal she just starts it 5 mins. later its warm or cold inside gets in pops the key in the switch down the road she goes very nice as she leaves the house about 5 am evey morning. The jap. cars are very easy to wire up remote starters on all you need is a wiring diagram for the door lock system and your set. i have installed about 100 of these units over the past 2-3 years and they are great and cost effective.
new to the forums hope i can help out
