Viper remote starter over stock alarm

am thinking of upgrading my stock alarm to viper one. im not sure if its worth it. i got a question, since our keys have a transponders in them, how does remote start works with these high end alarms?

im thinking they'll ask for one fo the keys to be secretly hidden somewhere close to the keyhole to fool the truck that a key is there.


has anybody have a vipre with thier 4th gen 4runner

I viper alarm. You need to give up one of your keys and get a little unit to trick it into thinking the key is in the ignition. Are you DIY or having someone else do it?

emosone else is going to o it. i might ask bestbuy or circuitcity as well.

We prefer circuitcity over all, IMO. They don't screw up like bestgay did. It came to about 350 for it all to be done, but its worth it.

I had mine done at CC. They did a nice job and the alarm is super nice. The LCD display makes the transmitter a bit bulky but I like being able to look at it and see if the doors are locked or if it's still running from the remote start. And if the alarm sounds the remote sounds, too.

I personally won't let anyone from either places lay a finger on my car....though I do give props to CC for picking up MTX's product line.

Installers could be good at both CC and Bestbuy, but you are going to pay the same at CC and Bestbuy as you would at a local shop. And local shops SHOULD know what they are talking about, and if you bring a competitor price, it can normally be met. standard alarm install should run you about $100 in labor. On a toyota you need nothing more than a transponder bypass module which is about $50, another $25 to wire it in, and generally another $75 for remote start.

I've got access to directechs.com, which for those who don't know, its an online directory of wires used in security, remote start, audio, etc... for cars. Tells me what additional modules and all that stuff needed for alarm and remote start installation. And I can tell you without looking up that the only thing you need for a toyota remote start/alarm is a DEI 556UW + whatever alarm you choose.

I second that about going to a local shop over a chain! If a local shop has been in business for more then 3-5 years , theres a good chance they know what they are doing otherwise..they wouldnt survive.

I also recommend that you ask the installer...what they plan on doing with the key and transponder. The reason i say this is, most installers are trying to get teh job done quick, so they wil just put the key in the transponder and hide it up in the dash. This is good for them..but bad for you. reason being, if a theif finds that transponder (not hard to do) and opens it...volia...a key to your truck! Lucky him. Make sure your installer saws off the actual key before sticking the end of it in the transponder.

Also...most thieves now adays can get past any alarm (since most alarms just interupt the ingnition. If you really want added protection, install one or more fuel cut off switches....these would be installed in only places you and yur installer would know. If you park in an area where you would like extra protection, flip these switches, and the truck isnt going anywhere unless the theif finds the switches..or flatbeds it!

On my 2004 truck i have one fuel switch, on my daily driver i have to seperate fuel switches.

always better to be safe then sorry in the end..
