VSC Help Needed - True or False?

I have done many searches and read as much as I can but I need assistance determining if there is anyway for me to disable my VSC on my 2006 V8 4x4 SE 4Runner. I have only had it for a couple weeks

I understand I have full time 4wd with the V8 and ATRAC is "always on".

1) True or False: The locking center diff can only be used in 4Lo mode.

2) True or False: If you press the center diff lock button in 4hi mode it will actually disable VSC but not lock the center diff.

3) If the locking center diff can be used in 4hi mode I assume it is not designed for high wheel spin and high RPM situations. (example: 3/4 wheel cut powerslide through 16" of powder)

I drive in snow quite a bit and am used to being able to power through some turns and control slides through use of power, etc.

The offroad prowess at low speeds is unbelievable but I am finding that the limiation of VSC in certain applications is not my favorite thing. I also do not want to harm the drivetrain. I am not interested in tearing anything apart but was not sure of any built in trick to disable it.

Others have come up with a way to disable it but it involves a little work. As for your other questions, this should help:

1) The locking center diff can be used in 4HI

2) Pressing the center diff lock turns VSC of and lockd the center differential.

3) The only thing you shouldn't do with the center diff locked is drive on dry pavement, the drive train will bind.

1) False. The center diff will lock in 4hi also.
2) False. It does lock the center diff & turn off the VSC but not the ATRAC. The same is true of 4lo.
3) Obviously there are limits... If you're on a really slick surface you should be fine from a mechanical stress standpoint assuming your tires are close to a stock size. Bigger than about 32.5 is probably pushing the design limit.


Be sure you disable your RSCA when your goofing around in the snow.

1. The diff can be locked in hi or low, btw you can also keep it UNlocked and drive on pavement in low. Useful for pulling a boat out of a lake, stuff like that.

2. It will do both; lock and disable vsc, hi or low

3. You can do 110 mph down the freeway with the center locked. There's no need to do that, but you can. Go ahead and do the powerslides, locking the diff is the way to do it. I would reference you to my myspace where I had a video of me doing some wicked brodies and slides in the parking lot at work, but then my boss sent me a friend request and I had to pull down anything that could incriminate me.

Just remember: locked center diff on dry pavement WILL lead to early drivetrain failure unless you can drive in a perfectly straight line and even then, variation in tread wear on the tires will cause unnoticeable amounts of binding that could lead to early failure

I do not believe there is anyway to disable RSCA on a 2006 without a mod.

That is great as I thought for sure there would be a speed restriction on the locking the center. It is definitely a unique and versatile system. After learing all of this I don't think I need to look at disabling the system, but you never know.

flyr - Finally, I checked out the thread on your signature. Any update or from anyone that used a factory switch w/relay?

You only have an RCSA button if you have side-airbags.

I don't know of anyone that has done it with a relay and a switch yet.
