VSC OFF and TRAC/VSC lights both came on

I stopped in the dealer 15 mins ago. The service manager read the code for me for free (win!) and the result is:

C1207 - P/R Range Switch

I'm not quite sure where to start. I feel like it HAS to be related to something I did when I was pulling the cluster in and out, and one time I even keyed it on with the cluster only partially in. I'm wondering if I fried the P/R switch, or something else accidentally. If someone that is better with electronics could interpret that wiring diagram in laymans terms, that would be awesome. Here's what I would like to know:

-What does "Driver Side J/B" mean?
-What are the first areas in the flow of that troubleshooting circuit that we can check?
-Where is the physical PNP switch located?

There's not a lot of info on the C1207 online....so if we can figure this out here on the forum, that would be sweet. Right now I'm still only $0 into this fix...and would like to keep it that way.

On the passenger's side of the tranny (since it says to jack up the 4runner) perhaps near the neutral start switch.

I would love to hear the Toyota engineer's basis of merit for ever creating the VSC crap.

Bump. I priced a new Toyota P/R range switch. $250. Gulp.

Soo.....since I won't be buying one of those, my options are testing the current one, and if it's bad, I might just pull the bulbs out of the cluster so I don't have to look at the lights. Full time AndyMod. I'm ok with it for a while at least.

YIKES!!

May have to look to a part out for that one..

I have been meaning to take a look at mine. Ill do it tomorrow while I work on the cargo box.

You should try to get your code read sometime. I'm really curious if it's C1207 as well. It might be something else.....

For 90 bucks? lol no thanks.

I'll first see if the PNP thing is messed up. If it isn't then I will have to get the code scanned.

lol, nah, try to sweet talk the service writer. If he just grabs the reader and plugs it in himself (instead of having a tech do it) he shouldn't charge you...if he's a decent guy.

You might call and just ask. Mention that a friend with the same issue had his read real quick for free, and you simply want to verify that yours is C1207 too. If you already have it self diagnosed, and you just want a 1 min verification, they very well might be nice and just do it. Also depends on if you ever buy stuff from them. I'm always buying little crap from my dealer, so even though I'm not a big $$ spender...they still know me.

And yes, testing the PNP switch first is a good idea of course. If it tests fine....then you'll need the code, like you said.

-What does "Driver Side J/B" mean? Junction Box, referring to your fuse box.

-What are the first areas in the flow of that troubleshooting circuit that we can check? The troubleshooting process on page 2 of the document is basically just testing the switch and the wires to make sure the switch functions as normal, and that you don't have a short.

-Where is the physical PNP switch located? I'd agree w/Little Ceasar, somewhere on/near the tranny.

Answers in red. I can't see how you would have fried the switch in the process of chaning your dash over to LED's, but the possiblity of you having caused a short is there. Maybe you wiggled a connecter or pulled on a wire?

Yes I will explain. The reason why it threw a code is because the skid plate ecu monitors the voltage level of the trac system. By putting led lights(low resistance, therefore increase in voltage), the skid plate ecu saw that voltage jump up, which isnt normal, which it thinks that there is a problem with the trac system due to the voltage just going up suddenly. All the ecu does is monitor voltage, so that's why it turn on the trac light because of the voltage level going up which it's not use to seeing. I can gurateen u that it's the led bulb that u put in the prndl(cluster). Report back.

Thanks. I had kind of come to that conclusion myself after thinking about it....because that specific fault code (C1207) gets set when the ecu doesn't read the correct voltage within 30 seconds of shifting out of drive. And LED's have less resistance than regular bulbs for sure.

Thanks for pointing this out. As far as the fix: I already removed the VSC OFF and the TRAC/VSC bulbs from the cluster...so I don't have to look at them. Honestly, I think I'm going to leave everything exactly the way it is right now. I know what the problem is, it's not hurting anything....and I really don't want my VSC or Trac system anyway. If the Trac system was one that used power instead of braking, I'd want it. But I'm just so used to driving a 4x4 without the electronic help of a traction control setup....I think I'll stick to what I know. Most of the time I use 4x4, it's for snow, or maybe mud. In both those, I'd rather power through and be able to have wheelspin.

Ripcord, is this your fix too? Did you put LED's in your PRNDL's?

I wouldn't think so, but you never know.

Then again, you don't know what fault code is set on your truck yet either. It might not be C1207.

Ok, little update for you.

Here is the location of the switch, on the passenger side of the trans pan. http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL...oypdf/02rmsour/2002/024runne/at/pnpsw/ovr.pdf

I managed to pull the switch. (freaking impossible to get to it!)

Tested the points mentioned with voltmeter.. Both had the same resistance. at about 2.2k Ohms.

..So its not the switch. Guess I gotta try to sweet talk the service manage seeing as I dont have $90 for a scan. Maybe I can get a hot chick friend to convince him, lol.
