Seriously you opened an account here just to bash the 4Runner on a thread that's 4 years old!! You are soo cool!! Go back to VDub land and have a Toerag love fest!!! Why don't you do some real world comparison on a trail with one of the guys here?? Instead of talking out your a**!
As i stsated in another previous post i came here looking for answers on my mother in laws 4 Runner but came across your idiot fest feeding off each others oxygen starved brains over comparing 2 vehicles that arent even in the same class! So yes naturally i defended the Touareg :)
Oh and because you obviously have a serious lack of reading skills i clearly stated in the exact same post the i put that YOU quoted, i wasnt in here to bash the 4 Runner and even stated that Toyota for the most part is a reliable vehicle but i really did need to set the issue straight.
Your an idiot please take your wifes dildo and put in your @$$...

Why not you joined it to talk crap about the Touareg so why shouldnt i join to defend it on behalf of idiots such as yourself... Plus im the one who has to deal with my mother in laws 4 Runner so technically speaking, in an unfortunite way, it makes me one of you guys dealing with the problems of the 4 Runner! Oh FYI thats how i found the forum is because i was trying to see what i could do about an issue with her 4 Runner which while reading i came across your idiotic rant and rave about the Touareg vs 4 Runner.

So again we bring back a thread that was 4 years old how many pages did you have to go back to find it????:bravo:

Guys, he's just kidding. He's a kidder. It's his name.

Seriously man (kidder).

I've owned a couple of GTIs and they were great cars. I'm a big fan of German cars. BUT, if you really think you're going to convince 4Runner owners on a 4Runner forum that they have vehicles that aren't any good at 4Running than I just feel bad for you.

The 4Runner is in it's 5th generation. When this thread was created 4 or 5 years ago it was in its 4th Generation. If these vehicles sucked they wouldn't still be produced.

The 4th Gen 4Runner gets its proven drivetrain from the Landcruiser and is based on the LC120 platform. This is a proven platform. If you save up your money and go do some serious over landing or expedition you'll find a handful of vehicles that are internationally renowned for their ability and reliability. Toyotas have an off road heritage. The 4Runners reliability is legendary (in a good way).

Check out ExPo: Adventure and Overland Travel Enthusiasts or

5 Best Overland Vehicles Ever | Pangaea Expeditions

or do your own expedition/overlanding search. You'll see some German vehicles their such as the badass GWagen.

The Touareg is a really nice vehicle. It's not as capable as a Land Rover but is about as reliable. It's got the same achilles heel - the technology. My 4Runner probably isn't as capable as some Land Rovers.

VW doesn't. The Treg is cool ok, but you won't find people taking them on Safari and that's not because they suck, but because of in a pinch serviceability.

The Touareg, as nice as it is depends very heavily on technology. One of the things a person looks for in a reliable off road vehicle is off road serviceability. That's one reason simple solid axle vehicles are preferred. You can take a few spare parts and fix them in a lurch.

If one of your airbags gets punctured on the trail you're totally screwed man. You just aren't going to be able to fix that trailside. You can't weld an airbag back together.

Even the oil changes on a Touareg are very involved. Not hard, just involved.

Even on my 4Runner I wish it didn't have a button to put it in 4Lo. I'd prefer a nice mechanical lever that goes KACHUNG when I shift into 4Lo, but I'll take what's available.

The things you look for in your Touareg are different than the things us folks on this forum are looking for.

Were some people being a little arrogant in their comparisons? Of course. That's human nature. I haven't looked at the 4Runner vs Touareg thread on the VW forums but it's probably the same thing. I certainly wouldn't to go over there and try to convince people their Treg is a POS. They bought what they wanted and to try and convince them otherwise is a waste of everyone's time.

Anyhow, if you want to keep arguing about this, fine. It's your life. Enjoy!

Please Please go take a look at our forum better yet the link is below. You will not find us trashing the 4 Runner there and actually even trying to compare the 2 the way you guys have here. The vehicles arent even close to the same which i have stated numerous times here but the individuals of this forum have theirs heads so far up their @$$ they cant seem to grasp that concept. But its good to read a person who actually has a clear train of thought! I wasnt here to bash the 4 Runner which i stated numerous times as well and wasnt here to try to convert Christians into Mormons just staed flaws of the 4 Runner and posted evidence of which but at the same time even stated that the Touareg has its own flaws. Yes they cost a lot to repair but wtf do you expect its a german vehicle!? The issues with the VW are electrical they were not engineered for the climates in North America, the electrical systems get over heated. Toyota uses cheap parts which is why they run into mechanical issues more so towards the suspension and cooling. They both have their trade offs but when the ignorance of these ppl try to say that a Touareg is trash and cant off road even though there are tons of Youtube videos of it tearing hills and creeks apart that just doesnt seem to meet the standards of Toyota owners. More so sad when these Touaregs are doing it sometimes stock with little to no modifications and still holding their own with Hummers and Land Rovers

Meh, I like the 4runner better. However, I still think the twin turbo diesel model is a superior vehicle...

The Touareg is nice, I for one never disputed that. The v10 TDI is a powerhouse, fit and finish is nicer, but no matter what you say they are not better off the pavement than (at least a 4/5th Gen) 4Runner. That was not its intended purpose. Its not the Moab rock crawler you are trying to make it out to be.

Think about this. What is the international symbol for off the beaten path driving in areas where there is no choice? Land Cruiser and Land Rover. The 5th/4th Gen is on the Land Cruiser chassis.

Alright well, most of the people who started this thread 4 or 5 years ago probably aren't even on this forum anymore. This is an OLD thread dude. I certainly wasn't a member then. Matter of fact I was on VW vortex with my 02 GTI 337. Now that I have a kid the GTI didn't suffice so I sold my off roader - my 97 Wrangler - and my GTI and decided to get an SUV (never saw myself doing that).

The six contenders for me were:

1. Land Rover/Ranger Rover
2. VW Touareg
3. Audi All Road
4. Toyota 4Runner
5. Nissan Xterra/Pathfinder
6. Jeep Commander

1. Way too many reliability issues with the LR - even the guys on their own forums admit it. Parts are expensive. Brakes wear out early. Poor performance per MPG. I still want one for some reason though???

2. Very nice. I liked my 02 GTI But I wanted something I wouldn't have to worry about expensive maintenance. I always took my GTI to Avalon motorsports for things that were too deep for me and when I asked him about the Touareg and Audi he said they were good cars but be prepared to spend money on maintenance and repairs. He's an honest guy and I recommend him all the time. I'll miss having a good reliable mechanic. http://www.avalonmotorsports.com/

3. See above

4. Reliable, not too many fancy bells and whistles. I can get to remote fishing/camping spots. This thing will last a long, long time. Easy to maintain. Good power per MPG. Great resale value. Con: you see them everywhere in CO.

5. meh. Just didn't' do it for me when I drove it. Some issues with transmission cooling systems.

6. I like the look of these. But again, some reliability issue and pretty poor performance per MPG.

The 4Runner hit the sweet spot for me. For me. Not for my neighbor with a LR and a Treg. But for me.

Re: the people on this forum bashing the Treg. I didn't read this whole thread, but I did see where this thread was referenced:

VWVortex.com - feedback requested Toureg vs. 4Runner

So, apparently there was some pissing contest 4 or 5 or 9 years ago and you decided to regurgitate it. Kind of like those civil war re-enacters.

True story man.

Anyhow, back to your original mission did you ever figure out what was wrong with your Mom's third Gen?

* Oh yeah, I looked at Subarus too, but for the ones I was looking at the MPG/Performance just wasn't their. Reliability as become questionable in the later models. They're everywhere in CO too.

All of the cars I mentioned are cool cars IMHO but there are differentiators. It depends on your priorities. I chose low tech reliability over bling this time around….

Actually its 4th gen and the CV joints were constantly wearing out! Couldnt put 20k miles on them before they were clacking they have been replaced 2 times now by Toyota, the 2nd time they made it a hard time to get them to do it because they thought we were abusing the vehicle even though there were no signs of that and i explained to them a 65yr old asian woman drives the damn thing so they finally caved and did the repair. If it goes out again its a lemon but they cant figure out why they are wearing so quickly. We had the water pump go bad on it at 38k miles which almost toasted the engine, luckily it didnt. New belt and pump had to be put in which stretched right outside the factory warranty. We are trading it in for the new Lexus RX350 before the end of the month to get her in something more reliable.
Mine is a 06 Touareg V8 and love it, minus the repair bill but in all honesty i have not had any issues with it that would make me change. I would love to have the TDI though they are a beast that cant be messed with.
Oh and the link you supplied is a really really crappy forum i dont go to that one, the one i linked has a lot more users and better input plus they run off the same software as this forum im guessing its the same hosting company.

BTW maybe you should of had this debate on your VW forum instead of a 4Runner one they might understand what you saying. Cause us toyota owners a just a bunch of illiterate rednecks. Good job on the personal attacks BTW as well. Tough guy behind the keyboard and interweb!!

I think we all know that they are different beast one is unibody, one has a soild axle.

This thread needs to be closed MODS!!

LoL i never said that my Touareg was as you say "an offroad machine" but you guys are clearly out of your minds when you state all this crap you cant do with the Touareg or the options you cant put on them and whatever idiotic things that come from your fingertips as you type! The Touareg stock has more capability then your slightly modified 4 Runners. We have a locking diferential which i will take over your 4 Runner allllllll day long! Wait until your 4 Runner is on 2 or 3 wheels and you cant control your decline and slams down on the ground then you will appreciate the quality and engineering put into the VW! My stock air suspension that will cost you $7k to put on your 4 Runner. The only thing you have going for you is your ground clearance stock which i do wish i had more of. When your trying climb over rocks and your wheels spin because the engineering put into that 4 Runner is so limited and doesnt know hot to convert the torque to the other wheels so yup you have to back up and go back at it again where as the Touareg has an all independent wheel control which just pulls itself over.
Go find youtube videos where they compare the 4 Runner vs Touareg (cant find them? because they dont exist) but you will find Toureg vs the Hummer in offroad!

Oh my. Hummer...haha:Dhahahaha:Dhahahahhah:Dhahahah. Like Hummer is the model offroader for all others to be compared to. Next you will tell us that the benchmark for best offroader is the LandRover Evoque.

And they don't exist because the Touareg couldn't make it. Comparing to the Hummer is a safe, sure win competion for just about anything.

But I am curious. A VW locker?? A center lock?? Or a 4WD lock button to negate biasing the AWD to the front or rear. I am looking at the Touareg as a cheaper deiselQ7 family car. Anyhow though through the various generations of 4Runner it has had either rear or center lock, I think the last year 4th gen had a trail edition and had center and rear lock.

Trails in every state suck when you're in a Touareg and can only go up to a level two.....

:roadkill:
OMFG how bad does your brain hurt?!? Does reading complicate you that much that you put bits and pieces together to make out a simple sentence? You obviously have the lowest IQ out of anybody in here so let me reiterate what i said so you can realize how stupid your comment was... OK LETS BEGIN
1. I said i didnt see a single 4 Runner make it over the 2nd hill and they turned back (meaning i ventured forward and watched the 4 Runner just like yours turn around in my rear view mirror)
2. If you insist on actually pushing your 4 Runner to Moab and find a way to get in a rut please review the following video on YouTube so you dont do like this guy does and flip his 4 Runner: "4runner flips off flipper", or this guy who manages to flip his 4 Runner on a beach lol its awesome "4runner with surfboards flips and rolls", but if your curious if you will find any Touaregs flipping you will NOT but you can find them getting stuck in videos but no more so then the 4 Runner... Anyways thats my final thoughts the simple mindedness of some of you guys is exhausting.

Why would i do something as stupid as that?! We wouldnt compare the Touareg to a f*cking 4 Runner in our forums you idiot, being they arent in the same class geezus you are a complete **** i swear. I really wish you were in the area so i could pop the hood of your 4 Runner and take a crap in it then wave good bye as i drive away in my Touareg.

The climate for North America is as varied as Europe's Climate... when they design a vehicle its designed for a large swath of climates. I find it very very hard to believe the exacting Germans or any car manufacturer for that matter would have the lack of foresight to not design a vehicle for various temperatures and humidities.

Toyota uses as many "cheap" parts as any other manufactuer does. The quality of the materials used is often pretty damn good, but its the design that is often rather silly or damaging. i.e. Toyota (like many others INCLUDING VW/Audi) use composite water pump impellers. Is it a cheaper product than the stamped steel ones? No, its actually a little better, does it make them sensitive to the types of coolant used? Oh yes, Try running a VW with pre-G11 or G12 coolant and watch those impellers disintegrate. The same thing happens with Toyotas and other vehicles.

The majority of all the issues that everyone has brought up in terms of the VW in an offroad situation is that it is far too "luxurious" a vehicle for the off-road scene. The ridiculous amounts of electronics and networking required to repair these vehicles is just not practical away from a fully equipped shop. (hell you can't even use a handheld datastream tool, because unless you know your addresses, you won't be able to navigate the literally expansive computer diagnostic system on these vehicles. Its something that VW did amazingly well, IF you have the knowledge and the proper tooling to navigate it.) An air suspension is great for on-road and mild off-roading, but in serious trail conditions you're gonna risk tearing a bag. You can't just duct tape those either, not to mention that your spare folds in on itself to store away compactly. I gaurentee you that your VW's are as fragile if not more fragile than the V8's All-Time 4WD when it comes to mismatched tire sizes. I'm absoultely pooch ****ed if I blow one of my 33's because the stock fullsized spare is a stock tire and will just damage the drivetrain if I put it on. I could barely see a person using a space saver spare (cool design by the way, its awesome to inflate and deflate! :) Reall neat idea) on a off-road tire Touareg. The lack of articulation from an IFS & IRS is abysmal compared to the 4Runner (hell, even the 3-5th gens have some of this inherent lack of articulation due to having an IFS)

Not to mention, active dampening systems, electronically controlled differentials, ect. These are all systems that cannot be field serviced, or if you are lucky enough to physically repair them, you need to either relearn or reprogram the vehicle. I don't know about you, but I don't carry a TechStream in my 4Runner at all times and I doubt VW owners keep a VAGCOM in theirs. The 4Runner has its own issues with electrical gremlins and field servicability, but in comparison to the Touareg, it is far simplier and that is a PLUS in the off-road community.

The Touareg, reliability, electrical, and mechanical issues aside; is a nice, comfortable, luxury cross-over SUV that lets the people who can afford it, play in the dirt while having the luxury of a on-road cruiser. They are designed primarily as Luxury Vehicles, while the 4Runner is a Truck-Based SUV first with some luxury sprinkled in.

Post Note- Anything is better than a Tahoe based Hummer... (HUMVEE or Bust baby!) Also, Land Rovers are in the same boat as the Touareg, they have far too much luxury, other than the Defender, there isn't a solidly Off-Road focused Land Rover, which is okay. They have the Defender for that market.

Oh and FYI to all the 4 Runner guys who say they dont make skid plate and wench kits for the Touareg and they arent off road capable and yada yada yada....

Skid Plates from VW Touareg EXPEDITION Edition? - Club Touareg Forums

Seriously guys can you do a little, i mean just a little research, google is a great place to start before you decide to post total crap on your own forums?

I did search and I found skid plates and winch mounts. But my question wasn't about those components. You could get those for a Audi A4 or even a Honda Civic for that matter.

I've found pictures of some mean looking Touaregs sporting mud tires, light covers, winches, skid plates, all the simple things. But I hardly saw one with a substantial lift kit or a full metal front bumper that bolts to the frame (anyone can get bull bars from a JC Whittney catalog, no offense to you guys who own them.), or a rear tire carrier for a full sized spare tire (see above about the space saver spare and issues it could cause). These are common mods not just for the 4Runner but any other vehicle that is serious about expedition, rock-crawling, trail riding, or any other form of off-road.

We're asking about these modifications (at least I am) because that is the first thing I think of when building a off-road vehicle. Same when I bought my 4Runner, first thing was, "okay, how do I build this thing into a tank..." and that'd be my same question withe Touareg, but honestly... the research I have seen, really doesn't offer much in the way of that.

Oh my. Hummer...haha:Dhahahaha:Dhahahahhah:Dhahahah. Like Hummer is the model offroader for all others to be compared to. Next you will tell us that the benchmark for best offroader is the LandRover Evoque.

LoL why are you even talking? Now your going to say the 4 Runner is better than Hummer?! Holly Christ you really dont know jack sh*t about vehicles do you?! A vehicle that was made purely for off roading is now crappier than a $24,000 import newly manufactured in the US but still all made of import parts... Yep you deffintely got all your facts in a row! Thumbs up and gold stars for this idiot :D
Go find a video of a 4 Runner pulling out a Hummer from somewhere, nope wont find it but you sure as hell will find a bunch of Hummers pulling out Toyotas and when there are videos showing the Touaregs running with the Hummer where does that place your 4 Runner?!?! CAN-03Runner <-- Idiocy at its finest

The 4Runner is built in Japan, and starts at $30k. You, quite obviously, are the one lacking reading skills. Go google it again.
