Did anyone else notice he was saying all 4runners have water pump issues or something but posted one thread about a 3rd gen? Not that common of an issue.
Pretty big generalization, I guess as were all of his arguments. Especially the one about 4runners turning around in Moab. Stock vs stock both vehicles could go to the same places or close to it....

Go find a video of a 4 Runner pulling out a Hummer from somewhere, nope wont find it but you sure as hell will find a bunch of Hummers pulling out Toyotas and when there are videos showing the Touaregs running with the Hummer where does that place your 4 Runner?!?! I too looked at a T-reg before I ended up purchasing my 03 4runner V8.
In the end I AM a TOYOTA fan, I liked the T-reg but it just didn't have the feeling like it could take an ass kicking. I looked at THOUSANDS of complains for both and given my needs I went with the 4runner.
T-reg's Losing Points: uni-body construction and reliability is hit or miss; from all of the reading i did i could see that the issues that most toyota owners were complaining about were cosmetic or minor in detail (spongy breaks/HW vibration, Ect.), the T-reg although the tech was newer it was not as proven (I am thinking about the alternator issues in particular here) also every T-reg i looked at had buttons that were worn and flaking off...poor quality)
No vehicle will last forever and if it does you can bet someone has put money and repairs into it. The Toyota is also way easier to work on (except alternator location) this was the final nail for me as I prefer to do all of my own work, the labor's of love will be easier with the 4Runner.

i wish i was here in 2007 to tell the OP how silly he was for even posting this and also to tell him how big of ass hats the people on the Kotex are. I would probably buy a Euro spec'd Toureg or Tiguan over a 4Runner (diesel and manual transmission available on all trim levels) they are both great vehicles for their intended purpose.
Caveat: I didn't read past the first page... but since I own both, I thought I'd reply.
We have a 2012 Touareg TDI Executive (fully loaded) and my 2008 4runner. The Touareg overall is a MUCH nicer SUV. Drives and handles better, smoother, quieter, and the luxury features are top notch. The 8 speed auto and turbo diesel are awesome and it gets 24mpg city/29 highway with me driving it. The full glass roof is awesome, and so is the memory seats/mirrors, navigation system (same as Bentley), etc, etc. It has a higher towing rating (7,700 lbs vs 4runner 7,300).
Now the negatives- I would NEVER off-road it. And the cost- it stickered for $60k! (I paid $56k). So of course it has more stuff than the 4runner which I paid $34k for. They also got rid of the transfer case with the latest remodel- so no low range.
So for a street driven SUV, I don't think you can beat it. But what do I drive? My 4runner. VW is for the wife and road trips with the family.
