VW Touareg vs. 4Runner

Caveat: I didn't read past the first page... but since I own both, I thought I'd reply.

We have a 2012 Touareg TDI Executive (fully loaded) and my 2008 4runner. The Touareg overall is a MUCH nicer SUV. Drives and handles better, smoother, quieter, and the luxury features are top notch. The 8 speed auto and turbo diesel are awesome and it gets 24mpg city/29 highway with me driving it. The full glass roof is awesome, and so is the memory seats/mirrors, navigation system (same as Bentley), etc, etc. It has a higher towing rating (7,700 lbs vs 4runner 7,300).

Now the negatives- I would NEVER off-road it. And the cost- it stickered for $60k! (I paid $56k). So of course it has more stuff than the 4runner which I paid $34k for. They also got ride of the transfer case with the latest remodel- so no low range.

So for a street driven SUV, I don't think you can beat it. But what do I drive? My 4runner. VW is for the wife and road trips with the family.

That's the first thing I noticed before i started reading his thread, hahahahha.

I always told my wife if we ever win the lottery, I'd get her whatever, but I would KEEP my 4Runner until it crumbles away.

EDIT: just saw the you have the VW in the garage. Picture still kinda funny though...

you cant beat German interior..even if its assembled in Mexico :lol:

i would be driving one of these no doubt if they had the same or even similar payload capacity as a v8 4Runner.

First off, Touareg's are made Slovakia, not Mexico. Jettas are made down there.

Payload capacity is higher in the TDI touareg than the V8 4runner. 7,700 pounds vs 7,300.

The interior is great. The entire area between the dash gauges is a multi-function LCD display.

Thanks. I love diesels, wish we could get Toyota diesels here in the US. She was expensive, had to sell my '12 Shelby GT500 (I know...) to get it.

I thought it was basically the same as the 4th gen system with a Torsen center diff that sends power front to rear and vice versa. Our center diff is lockable where as theirs isn't.

I might have read your comment wrong.

It is very similar however most VW's use a Haldex AWD not Torsen like most Audi's use. Quattro and 4motion are just trade names VAG uses.

I stumbled in here from the 3rd forum.

All I can say is that I like 3rds more than 4ths, but that I was still salivating over the 4Runners instead of the VW, and wishing the whole time I was out driving my Runner.

Only had to look out the window at it about a million times during the read.

Agree that it would make a great vehicle for my wife, but I believe I would rather buy her a Subaru Forrester--I believe it would be safer for her for winter driving, especially if it has studded winters on it.

Lets look at this fiscally!

A Toureg costs $50K BASE!

A 4R costs $31K

Put $20K into the 4 Runner. It will be out trailing the Bowler wildcat... well not quite but sure as hell would kill a TREG

The only thing I liked about the Taureg was the V10 diesel. On the road it was an animal and would pull a house over! The engine was a beast with 300HP and 550 Ft/Lbs... when it ran of course. Who puts each side of the engine on a different ecu? Really? The engine was ran like it was 2 5-cylinder engines and was really hard to diagnose and keep running. I really can't say I've liked anything other than that about the SUV's though.
