WallabEOD 3rd Gen Build

I have been lurking around here off and on for a couple years. I finally decided to pull the trigger on a couple things thanks to the influence of several of the veterans on this forum.

It all started several years ago when I got married. It's ok though because she came with one of these:

Which is really sweet because it is one of these:

Of course I didn't know how awesome this was because I wasn't sold on the 4runner platform growing up around the desert southwest and every truck is a lifted garage queen. That changed when I took it out by myself through some areas that were highly questionable with stock suspension and the street tires I had put on it to save money. I only stopped because I ran out of clearance and I didn't want to get hung up on a rock. That is when I started lurking around here. A couple years later I sold my other daily driver a 2007 F150 Super Crew and the '98 4Runner is now my sled.

I am starting my build with a '98 4runner that came as dowry, with 160,000 miles on it. She is a Canadian transplant, my wife is from the Northwest, I found that out because of the "Windshield Wiper Fluid" light.

This is her at the start, the sun destroyed the paint in the past 8 months.

I started with the suspension since it was original and the tires were going bald. I love getting packages in the mail.

I decided to tackle this by myself. I spent 3 hours on the front. (Toytec BOSS)

Then another 3 on the back. It wasn't hard, just a lesson in patience and tools. (OME 891, Sport shocks)

I read a lot about the capabilities inherent to the 4runner so I wanted to stay close to stock for tires, I bought a set of these (General Grabber AT2 267/75R16):

She now looks like this:

I knew this was coming, but was hoping it wouldn't have been this soon. (30 miles) :bash:

I have limited time for this weekend and have to take it on a road trip. DUCT TAPE and HOSE CLAMPS till next weekend.

This is the start, I plan on sliders, bumpers, drawers. There are several of you out there to blame. I am amazed at the amount of the talent represented on this forum and thank all of you for sharing. I've also been trolling ExpoPortal so that is more of the direction I will be going with this. Thanks for reading.

Welcome aboard! Nice coil overs! :thumb3:
Downpour11. Thanks. So far I am really happy with how everything has turned out with the BOSS suspension from TOYTEC. I put a couple hundred street miles on it this past weekend and will hopefully get it on some light desert trails this upcoming weekend before I bring it home and start playing with the adjustable coils. Even with the lift and 265/75 r 16's we got 18 mpg's on the trip. Never would have happened in Chevy land where I am from. LOL. Like I said...really happy.

Welcome.

Is there a tear in the boot? Are the CV's shot?

I've noticed that after a lift is put on you tend to get some grease pushing out of the boot. I'd wipe it clean and watch it assuming you have time before the road trip and making a mess out of it with duct tape. Clean, drive, inspect.

Did you install a diff drop? It's not the cause of the grease leaking but if you didn't I'd look into one.

There is no tear in the boots. I believe they were just leaking from the change in angle. I ended up driving them with no duct tape and just did the duct clamps (hose clamps with screw driver thingy : ) ).

Last weekend I went to O'Reilly's and purchased new CV axles. I installed them and found that my old CV's are still good. I will get some new boots on them and have some spares.

I also had to replace the sway bar links, one was bent and the bushings were shot anyway. I had purchased the ES kit but the inner diameter on the bushings was too large. Anyone known if this is a design flaw?

I was also getting a clunking sound from the rear suspension. Turns out some goober shade tree driveway wanna be mechanic  (this guy) installed the bushings improperly on the upper shock mounts and had a loose nut. Tightened that down and no more clunking. Found a great thread through the google search here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/116840-done-lot-work-rear-end-still-clunks-grrr.html.

I took it back in to get realigned and they told me it needed a new ITRE, $300. I thanked them and came home to find this http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/102959-inner-tie-rod-removal-installation.html.

I am loving the TOYTEC suspension. I finally got my wife in the 4runner and she mentioned how it is riding much better. Thank you for your posts everyone. This forum is saving, and costing...muahahahaha, so much money because of all the great info that has been posted by its members.
