Wallet key?

After a quick search, I can't find much of anything on this. Has anyone ever found a spare key that can be kept in a wallet in case I pull a boneheaded move and lock my keys inside?

Just get a plain key cut. You could use it to unlock the doors. It won't start the vehicle but, it will open the doors. The hardware store that cut my flip key used a plain blank to make sure the cut would work before cutting the flip key. Only charged me for the blank too which was cool. :bounce:

They will make a flat key for you. Had one in the t100 days lol came in handy often

Anyone remember the good date/bad date theory?

Edit: it was a 98 so not helpful lol

I just had another key made and put it in one of those magnetic key cases and hid it inside the frame somewhere you REALLY have to want to get it. It's come in handy already after I lost my blank key while surfing.

Glad to hear this - I've always carried a spare pocket key for my vehicles in my wallet and that's saved my butt more than once. I work construction and trying to carry most huge modern, electronic keys in my pocket or lunch box is nearly impossible to do without damage or loss. Not cool when a dump truck runs over your bean box and destroys a factory key/fob on a remote job site....

Just had a blank cut down at the local hardware store. I hadn't actually used the key in the door until when I was testing the new spare. Are the lock barrels electronically assisted in these things too, or what? :dancin:

Yes the door lock as well as the hatch lock are just a switch that triggers the lock actuator.

If you turn the key twice in the door it unlocks all the doors.

This thing just continues to amaze me. :lock1:

One potential issue though. Any idea what happens if the battery dies?

I truely don't know the answer to that as my battery has never died while the doors were locked, but I would think the battery would have to be completely dead to be a issue, since I don't think it would take very many amps to unlock the doors.

The minute I read the word "Bean Box" I thought "this sounds like something Sarge would say..."

I was able to get a hardware store key cut exactly like described here. It opens the doors and the hatch, but won't activate the starter because there's no magic chip in the key.

When did you get a 4Runner? Welcome aboard!

Our AAA insurance office used to make those but not anymore :(
Alternatives:
Find "Credit Card Spare Key on amazon, OR
Have duplicate key made, cut-out approx shape out of old credit car, put key in, secure both sides with packaging tape, or
I just wear mine around my neck while mountaineering, kayaking ,sailing, running, getting thrown in pool by drunk friends.... :)

Uh, THE Murph??? Lol - small world, buddy. Believe it or not, I sold the Land Cruiser - getting too crippled and blind to work on it, so she went to a new owner. Picked up the 4Runner in December up in Rockford - its the new "work truck". Still here, still alive and kicking..

If the battery dies, the key only opens the driver’s door. You have to manually unlock the other doors from inside the car. You also cannot “automatically” lock all 4 doors with a dead battery.

I don’t know if you can open the hatch or not with a dead battery.
