want to color key my future bull bar...

So.....I'm thinking of getting either a T&H or Westin bull bar/safari bar....and wanted to have it color keyed to my Titanium Silver 06 SE. How would I go about doing this? Where would I take it and about how much do you think it would be? Also, just how accurate to the OEM Titanium silver paint would it be? pretty good?

wouldn't it rust if I powder coat it? Perhaps I can powder coat it then clear coat it??

and how would I tell the people doing it what color I want it....just show them my 4runner and they'll know??

i am not familiar with powder coating and i'm not sure if this would be a good idea but.. if it's chrome, can't you just sand the chrome off since it's metal? and prime/paint it? i'm not saying you should but just wondering if you could do that. i always wanted to change my chrome bumper to match my black T4R. but when you bring it to the shop to get something painted (car, spoiler, bumper, etc.) they are pretty accurate with the paint colors. but this depends on certain person. some guys does bad job in painting. -_-

If you buy the T&H bar, it is stainless so it will not rust. Not sure about the westin. Find a local powder coater or look online, but there are tons of color options.

Besides, even if it were not stainless, you won't have rust problems unless your powdercoat is penetrated down to the bare metal.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that in addition to cosmetics, the point of powder coating was to protect the metal.

I purchased a black Westin Safari bar a while back, sanded it all down to metal, primered it with an automotive primer and painted it using Dupli-Color (T229 Silver M). This is a very close color to the Titanium Silver and I am happy. I spent a total of about $20. I heard that some people on the board took it to a local shop and they painted it for $150 (I can't remember who it was). I then sprayed on a couple coats of an automotive clearcoat.

The important thing is to make sure the metal is sanded rough. If you sand it smooth (using too high of a grit) , be prepared to have the paint just peel right off. Trust me. I painted my bar twice, because I didn't prep it correctly the first time around.

Get the T&H powder coated black (it is stainless). A body shop can just sand it to rough the surface and paint it with acrylic urethane. No need to clear it. I'm not sure if it could be powder coated over powder coating. If it could, it would be more durable then paint but urethane is pretty durable. I have paint wheels with it and they have held up for over ten years and still look great. The powder coating may withstand a bump better.
