Want to do a 5sp swap in 99 4r sr5 auto

You cannot just say you wanna then decide not to without telling us why! I demand an answer! :peep:

I don't want to go through the hassle of having to do the whole swap. I just want it to be over with. It seems like I can find an auto for about $400 and it should be done.

So what I am thinking happened is your tranny blew, you were in the mind set of lets go manual and then the project list grew beyond expectations and then you found out for $400 you could just put another used tranny in.. makes sense.

The thing is, money is tight right now. I think i may go manual after collecting parts while the truck is running.

Back from the dead. The local junk yard has a 3.4 4x4 5speed tacoma. What would I need to do to get it running in my 4r? Would I be able to use my AT transfercase?

You need the tranny, the tcase, the drive shafts, the flywheel, flywheel bolts, clutch, manual 5vzfe same year ecu ( only if you are repinning your engine harness, otherwise youll have a check engine light on ALWAYS, and in some states you won't pass inspection) I'd take the cross member, might not need it but in case it's different. Slave cylinder, master cylinder, clutch pedal, and all the interior trim parts.

I got all my parts for $400 from a donor truck.

Actually, you don't need the tcase. I would rather have the J-pattern than the push button, but- from the extensive research I've done- you can use the push button no problem. In fact, less 4wd wiring would need to be done if you kept your push button.

As far as interior trim, the tacoma doesn't have any you'll need- the center console bezel needs to be from a 4Runner. You'll still want to grab the rubber boots though.

Get as many plugs as you can- clutch pedal engage and release switches and plugs, clutch start cancel switch and plug, reverse switch and plug, etc. Same with VSS and 4wd switches if you swap t-cases.

Didn't know about tcases. Sorry. Don't really the cancel start clutch button. Unless you really really want it.

Curious, because I took the tranny and the tcase out of a 97 manual. I have 97 auto. Both j shifter. I can reuse my tcase and it will bolt right up to the manual tranny ?

I think the Tacoma ecu are completely different then 4runners. If you don't care about check engine light being on then its whatever. For me, I care. And in nj I won't pass inspection with it on. And it could cover up a acual code without you checking for codes dialy to be safe.

I have a 99 with a j shifter and the taco gas a j shifter as well. Are you sure about the ecu? I live in md and wouldn't be able to pass inspection with a CEL.

Ive done the 2wd - 4wd, auto - 5 spd conversion all at once. If its already 4wd you are a mile ahead as you wont have to cut off the trans crossmember and move it forward. You still have to drill out the firewall for the slave cyl and cut the floor a little bigger for the shifters.

you will need the 5 spd ecu, and i would take the engine tranny harness and swap that over, it makes it plug and play and you wont have to screw with wiring the transmission stuff.

Shit you need:

-trans
-clutch/flywheel
-slave, master, clutch pedal and all lines, clutch switches and cancel switch with wiring
-interior trim bits
-shifters
-skinny brake pedal, dont take the whole bracket, just the big pivot bolt
-trans crossmember
-driveshafts
-wiring harness
-pcm
I changed the cluster to get rid of PRNDL

This is all on a 3RZ, but the 5vz will be very close.

Yes 100% positive you need a 5vzfe 4x4 M/T ecu. But the Tacoma ecu is different from ours. Your best bet is to get a used ecu of car parts. I got mine for $70 and $120 for whole engine harness in case I want to swap the harness.

Your best bet is to get a wiring diagram of your 4runner and that same.year Tacoma and compare the pins and connectors of the ecus. But I read somewhere that it's different. But not 100% sure. You could ask over at the Tacoma forums.

I have a strong feeling the pins are the same. The big difference will be its fuel mapping.

96-99 4runner auto and manual ecu have different pins/connectors. I know something is different between the Tacoma ecu and 4runner.

Again, likely just the programming as its in a different vehicle, it's prbably 99% compatable and would work just fine if used as the engine and trans inputs and outputs are the same. Although the best bet is to always use the same year and model. The m/t PCM just lacks the automatic trans control pins.
