Want to purchase '07 4Runner this week

Hello all,
I am brand new to this forum and had a few questions in regards to an '07 4Runner Sport 4WD, V6(Shadow Mica). I am going to look at it tomorrow night. It has 14,500 miles on it. They are asking $23,888(what should I offer?). I have never driven a 4Runner before but always loved them aestetically and was wondering what to expect as far as how the ride may feel. I really like a soft ride when it comes to cars or trucks. I do not like to feel every little bump I go over. Also, are there any issues that are common on this year or generation. Anything that you can tell me about these vehicles would be greatly appreciated. Obviously I know the Toyota name in itself means quality and that this is a true SUV and not a CUV. I do not do any offroad driving at all. Thanks in advance

Hi chase,

Welcome. I think the price is a little bit higher, but i the range, the car has few miles. So far, there are no issues with the 4Rs, so, lets wait to keep it like that. I you have chance to get the 4R, do it, it's totally worth it.

Once you have it, post some pics.
 
Here are a few things to take a look at:

1. test 4hi AND 4lo to make sure both are working properly (place vehicle in neutral while stopped, change the switch and wait for the light to go solid).

2. check for rust around the moonroof seal and around the rear hatch window seal (seems to be common).

3. check all 4 shocks for leaking (if it has XREAS, they are known to have premature failure)

4. check inside & outside of front rotors for deep grooves. if you see one side with deep grooves it may indicate a frozen caliper (another known issue with 4th gen 4Runners)
 
one more thing.

Open and close the moonroof SEVERAL times and listen for any unusual noises. If it has noises, make sure the dealer addresses it BEFORE you buy the 4Runner. There is a TSB out for this.
 
All of the 4th gen 4Runners have a nice soft ride to them. In my opinion, they ride more softly than many crossover SUVs. I spend a considerable amount of time behind the wheel of an '09 Acura MDX and the 4Runner has a nicer ride over small impacts or freeway expansion joints.

If safety is a big concern, check to see if the '07 has side impact airbags. It was an option that year. All 2008 and newer 4Runners came with the side airbags as standard equipment.

There are only minor issues with our 4Runners, nothing terribly serious. There seems to be quite a few issues with the sunroof getting stuck open (no issues tilting up/down) or just generally jammed. There's also an issue with a strong sulfur smell immediately after hard acceleration. Toyota has issued a TSB and even offers a replacement catalytic converter, but most owners still experience that suflur smell even afterwards. If you're not a lead foot, you'll probably never even notice it.

Don't hesitate to get a 4Runner. They are extremely reliable and smooth running vehicles that also happen to be very capable under any weather conditions.

I don't agree with you there.... XREAS failures seem to be very uncommon, although it does happen. Every once in a while I read about someone who has a leak in one of their XREAS shocks, but the frequency of that happening seems to be very rare. I'd bet that XREAS shocks leak less often than regular shock absorbers. The only real downside of XREAS is that it is expensive to replace if it does fail.
 
This is exactly the kind of info. I was looking for, thanks. The ride is most important to me. We do get snow where I am at in the northest but front wheel drive is usually enough to get you through. Unfortunately the 07 I was going to look at this evening was sold. Oh well, back to the search.

If the ride is your number one concern, you'll probably be very happy with the 4Runner. To me, it has the perfect ride..not harsh at all, but firm enough to keep it from feeling like grandpa's old Caddy.

Actually, if you're looking for a really nice ride quality AND decent handling and cornering ability, check out the Sport Edition 4Runners (any year '03 to '09) because they have XREAS standard. It's basically a shock absorber system that diagonally links the shocks via hydraulics to allow the vehicle to corner with less body roll, while still allowing the smooth ride. XREAS was an option on the Limited version, standard on Sport Editions, and not available on SR5 models. I have it and it's one of the things I love most about my 4Runner. I really like the way XREAS makes my 4Runner handle, especially since it's a full frame, straight axle vehicle.
 
sorry to change the subject ... but what is XREAS? what year did they start making this? and what model does it come with?

First introduced on 4th gen 4Runners, 2003+. Standard on Sport Editions, optional on Limiteds.
