I got my 97 4runner with 258k on her and she now has 262k. It was bone stock, now its lifted, lights, intake , muffler, larger tires and it all gets used 2-3 times a month. Runs and drives great and i plan to supercharge in the future.

Yea, I began my upgrade once we became empty-nesters. That was at 309,000. As the original owner, I've kept it in GREAT shape and it will stay in the family. Relatively easy to work on and inexpensive maintenance. Plus it's no longer a DD. Being built for fun now.

I'm definitely swaying towards upgrades. You've all put my mind at ease. Thanks for the info! Now the big question is what comes first?! Oh, how does the 4R handle when towing? Does it get squirrelly?

After maintenance (including an external tranny cooler)?...
Start with the cheap stuff and the basics. Remove the running boards, get tires that are great for the terrain you expect, extend the rear diff breather, and then build it up as the needs arise. Avoid doing modifications that don't serve a real purpose for your uses
Man if you like the truck, keep it and keep up the good maintenance for another 100k miles. That's like, what, 6 or 7 years? Newer aint always better. If I were in your shoes, I'd put the money in your old faithful and pass on the newer stuff. That's just me. Good Luck.

I wheel with my brother and he has a fjc 07 TRD
Both are very very good trucks off road, we ran several trails together and once modified its pretty much driver and driver experience. The 4Runner has gotten me to 98% of the places I wanted to go. The rest would have took a modified truggy. The 4Runner has a different break over angle than the fjc but not much.
In all honesty I know people who are just adding super chargers at your milage, at 160k mines is just feeling about broken in right and mines has had a charger for 155k out of the 160k so that tells you something.
There is a hell of lot more support for 3rd gens than when I started building mines. Also the good thing now I noticed is a lot of return to stock sales so you can grab parts cheap and pick and pill/wrecking yards are starting to see 3rds so plenty of parts, ie elocker swap if you don't want to pay for the arbs
Mines has no payments lower entry cost
His fjc has super charger lust.
I also have and 02 sport so by adding arb lockers front and rear it's pretty much has given me every traction option minus manual locking hubs.
My lift was an original Sonoran steel 1.2. Now kicked up a notch with radflos on order.
But best of all will have legendary Toyota reliably so your good
