wanting to buy this 4runner but need your help w/ a prob first please!

i used to own a 98 4runner sr5 4x4 but sadly had to sell it,
now that i'm older i want another 4runner,

i found a 2001 (2wd) 4runner sport with a hood scoop,automatic,v6,186XXX miles. Its a beautiful truck but it has a problem with a horrible shake in the engine.

when you crank the truck its fine but after you drive for a few minutes,the engine shakes when you stop at a stop light or stop in general you can watch the hood scoop wobble. im sure its the engine,you can watch it rock when you open the hood.

the truck is has an Automatic trans that shifts great and the 3.4 V6
now i think from what i've read that it could be a list of things:

it needs a tune up (plugs,wires,ect)

Needs the sensors cleaned,or replaced,like the map and throttle body sensors

The harmonic Balancer needs replacing,or is loose

the motor mounts are shot

there is no CEL or warning lights it cranks rite up and drives great till you stop and let it idle

if there is anything else please tell me if its nothing major i will buy this truck,if its going to be a nightmare i might just pass thanks guys!

I would pass. IMO if you are going to buy a car and don't WANT a project, then buying something that isn't working 100 percent, or has a problem that you don't know 100 percent how to fix, don't buy it. Again, just my .02
 
Are you just guessing at those things? I haven't heard of motor mounts or harmonic balancers going bad. How old are the plugs & wires (guessing original)? Compression test? Timing belt probably needs to be changed. How's the rest of the truck? Transmission, interior, paint, rust?

How much are they asking? Are they willing to knock $500 off for the shaking engine and another $800 for the timing belt change?

The owner needs to either set it right or knock a BUNCH off for passing his headaches on to you. Otherwise I'd walk. There'll be another.

And finally, are you sure you're ok with 2WD?
 
the truck is mint cond nothing wrong with it at all paints perfect the interior is great everything is good

they want $6000 for the 4runner,

the plugs look like the orig toyota wires to me,its a one owner 4runner,

im planning on taking it to a mechanic before i buy it BUT i have searched on here and i saw the balancer and the other issues. i was wanting to ask on here to see what anyone else thought and not hear some crazy thing from the mechanic
yes im sure with a 2wd i have a 4x4 to play in

i really like the truck b ut they make more and if its a major issue i will def walk
 
$6000 for a truck that barely runs? WALK.
Another one will come along for a better price, I got my perfect 01 Sport for $8000. You'd probably be out more than 2K trying to bring that truck up to standard.

Don't buy problems.
 
I agree that you should pass. 6k for 186k and only 2wd is way too much. Having a nice interior is a plus, but not if the engine is bad. You can find deals for 150k with 4x4 for around 6k if you wait long enough.
 
Good think you walked you can defiantly find better deals out there. Plus even if you have another vehicle with 4wd I would only buy a 4runner 4x4 cause it nice to have when you need it plus the resale value is higher. I bought my 99 SR5 V6 4x4 with 154k mile for under $4000. You just have to wait till you find the right one for the right price. Good luck
 
ya good choice, i just picked up a 97 limited 4x4 with e-locker with 140k miles for $5700, just be patient and the right truck will come along
