Warn M8000 and Shrockworks Bumper

Exhausted our advanced search feature for this combination and came up empty. A few hit and misses in the threads but nothing in the title or 3rd gen specific.

For those with the M8000 series (VR,S etc) AND a Shrockworks (...or other...not much difference in a winch mount) bumper looking for the following info:

• Did you guys end up having to clock it?
• Where did you install the control box?
• Are any of you using the Warn 16296 retro plug? Hows it holding up and where did you install it? Pros/cons
• Is the wireless remote worth the 100 bucks or just hard wire to switches and use the wired controller. (would rather have that as just a backup)

I picked up the Warn M8000s (proven performer) and the Factor 55 FlatLink E along with the Cascadia 4x4 Flipster V2.

I want to hide the control box and add the retro switch somewhere easily accessible. If the remote is good I'm not going to hard wire any switches.

I put my control box in the engine bay by cruise control unit. I have also seen posts where people put it on the frame rail by the alternator. I opted for the remote instead of hard wiring to cab...works great.

I have a ARB so I can't help there but I do know the m800 comes clocked feet down . I think the shrockworks is like the ARB which is feet forward .

I'll preface this by saying that I don't have a Warn or a SW bumper, but a Smittybilt and AOR instead, but I think I may be of some use...

Mine is hidden in the engine bay. I also installed a marine grade battery cutoff switch so there is no power going to the winch unless I turn the switch. Just an extra safety measure in case of an accident and the power cable getting cut or some freak accident. Also keeps people from doing something stupid while I'm not looking.

I didn't get a wireless remote or in-cab controls. In cab controls would be kinda nice, but at the same time you're gonna have to get out to hook the winch up so you're already gonna be dirty. Might as well just hook up the wired remote while you're out there and run the control into the cab if that's where you'll be winching from. The cable on the wired controller should be plenty long.

Then installed some fun things like my winch finally. Remote mounted the solenoid and mounted a Blue sea fuse battery disconnect switch inside the engine bay on the passenger side. It's all mounted on some left over tinted lexan I had left from when I made my fairing. Also got new longer higher gauge wires made for the power wires. They came form Greg's marine on eBay and they were very high quality. It was nice not having to mess with putting terminals or heat shrink on the cables either.





I'm really happy with how the winch install came out in the end. It was worth the extra work of taking the solenoid apart, rewiring, and all that.

I've been eying some bumpers as well and was wondering about the ones that seem to sit down inside. But after seeing the Addicted plate there, that looks pretty sweet. Good looking rig. By the battery switch, that little fuse box, where did you get that? Thanks.

That is a super slick front end man. I really dig the textured flat black grill and hood lead. Very nice.

It looks like you and [MENTION=116387]Unner[/MENTION] mounted yours in a similar location. If the remote ever crapped out on you, you would have to use the remote with the hood open if I'm looking at this correctly.

Unner, as always, it's great looking at your rig. Always love your attention to detail. I like the idea of the extra safety switch under the hood. I'll be going to a dual battery setup (Luna Pro) which is going to suck up more room with a switch and a relay. I think I might be able to piggy back on that system with a safety switch.

To operate your winch, you have the wired controller and the contactor box is under the hood or did you remotely move it somewhere off the controller? I didn't see that mentioned in your post.

I like to start the topic in it's own thread and then move it to my build if needed or link to it. Soooooo much great information get's lost on this site. Wish there was an easier way to organize all of it.


From the looks of it, I need to take a trip to West Marine and build up three wires for my controller that will reach back to the ABS relay box.

There's not a lot of room in the bumper to move the clutch lever even if I do clock it. I might end up losing the freespooling feature and just leave it engaged.

I'll pick up the wireless remote but I still want to mount the Five wire retro plug as a back up without having the need to open my hood.


Summit Racing offers this in both the three wire and the five wire.


The three black #2 AWG electrical cables are too short for anything except having the controller mounted to the winch or right next to it. My guess is, I'm going to have to go and build three longer cables.

Good thing about wireless or wired remote is you can have anther person run the winch and you keep both hands on the wheel. I had a tire off a cliff edge due to accidenty getting sideways up a loose climb. I did not want one hand on wheel and work winch at same time in that situation.

Yea, I would like to have both my hands on the wheel in that situation!

Wireless or wired, I would want to have my hood closed so the optional retro plug seems like it should be a "necessity" unless there are other ideas out there.

-Yes, if the plug is hard to access. No, if it is easy to access. Wireless is great and easy, but keeping that wired backup is a good idea.

Thanks, Not sure what fuse box you're talking about. The thing mounted with the battery kill switch is the contactor box for the winch and the fuse box infront of it is an OEM Toyota one that's been in the truck since new.

Thanks for the compliments! You've got a clean rig too!

For mine I open the hood, plug it in, and then close the hood on the first latch, but not the second latch. That leaves enough clearance to get the controller cable through the body gap without pinching it.

The only thing that I changed with my contactor box was I took it apart and added longer cables so it would reach back to where I mounted it. I'm not sure I understand your question.

I used this post below in his build thread as a guide/inspiration when I was rewiring mine to go under the hood. He did an incab controller too. Might be something you want to take a look at if you haven't seen it already.

Good input. I'll look at my bumper and see if there's room to install the control box next to the winch. Clock - AKA: Rotate the clutch control 1/4 turn since the shrockworks bumper is front mount.

Yes, if the wireless remote stopped working I would have to use the wired remote (which I keep with me as a backup). Also, I should mention that instead of a selectable marine switch I added a solenoid to control power to the winch with an in cab switch. Just a different route... The solenoid is the silver thing on the wheel well with the attached yellow, green and red wires.

So far not happy with the bumper/winch combo. I found my bracket that came with my bumper and tried to see if I could make that work somewhere inside the bumper. I don't see how it's possible.

Not possible to use the bracket that comes with the Warn either.

I don't have a lot of room by the radiator for the Solenoid to sit into. The transmission cooler takes up the room next to the radiator.

And yes, I do need to clock it a 1/4 turn to reach the clutch lever.

If I go the route that [MENTION=116387]Unner[/MENTION] went, then I'm into the winch for another four (3 for the solenoid, 1 for power) brand new #2 AWG wires long enough just to reach the winch.

It looks awful mounted on top of the bumper but I believe that's the intended mounting location.

Not much room for it to rest in between the bumper and the radiator

I still had my leftover bag from my bumper installation and this bracket is designed for a remotely mounted solenoid. The Warn factory bracket can't be used and the clutch will need to be clocked a 1/4 turn just to reach it from underneath.


Not a FAN AT ALL of this big ugly thing sitting on top of the bumper. A different style bumper perhaps but not this one.

I don't like the way they look sticking up off the bumper either. If you can't get the box to fit in the bumper anywhere I would look into mounting it like I did. I bought pretty much all new wires off a place on ebay called Greg's Marine I think. Expensive yes, but they are really high quality and I didn't have to mess with making my own wires. Any wire in a very heavy gauge like that is going to be expensive already...
