Warning for New Forum Members...

While it may seem that way, sometimes it is simply senior members' desire to chuckle since there are literally pages and pages and pages of basic lift and tire questions. However, I do remember what it is like to be new and I and many others are willing to answer basic questions when it doesn't come off as lazy. Sometimes the wrong person gets flamed, but this is the nicest and most helpful group of forum truck guys I have found.

OP. I was only going to do a small lift and some wheels.... yeah, that escalated quickly. :welcome:

I understand some purpose to amalgamating the same topics, but what I find ironic is that for every double thread, there are at least 10 posts scolding the OP to use the search bar that we all have to sift through. Every new post also starts with a "before you flame" disclaimer as well. Which is worse, more threads than necessary or threads spammed full of "use the search bar" responses? I personally think the best way to deal with unnecessary threads that have been discussed to death is to ignore them. I am not going to open a thread with one post. Most of the time the thread turns into someone answering anyway so now its just a forum clogged up with useless "use the search bar" responses with an answer at the end. And to be honest, the search option on forums is pretty horrible that's why many people start a new thread because they couldn't find the answer they were looking for.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a problem with t4r.org but an issue across all forums. I think this is a great forum with a lot of good shared knowledge thus why I spend a lot of time lurking. I just find that 1000 posts about the search bar more irritating than a few extra started threads. Just my 2 cents.

I know the "old guys" catch a lot of grief from their directed responses. However I find many of the "old guys" spent a lot of time doing the research, putting answers to commonly asked questions in their footer and sharing some good advice that have saved many newbies like me a lot of dough and grief. :smashputer:

Yep, I agree. Browsing through, you learn who's posts are going to be helpful to read, and who's don't have a lot of thought behind them.

I've read through A LOT, even before I joined. I see both sides; sometimes the "search bar" response comes out pretty quick, and other times I fully agree: stop asking the same questions that have been answered several times and do a search. The forum didn't just start when you joined...

The "old guy" bit was tongue in cheek. Being on the "noob" member side, I had to slide a jab in to the "use the search bar" members. BUT, I also acknowledged they're answering the same questions over and over. and over. And multiple posts on the same thing isn't as easy as having all the info in one spot.

Nice to know! Will definitely make future searches easier. I'm clearly guilty of not reading through the basics since I see it's a sticky on the first page...
But why ask for directions when you can just start driving and go?

Loving the forum - lots of great stuff on here, great build threads and pics! Stuff I wouldn't have thought of doing with my truck. But now I am!

Jesus, if I see one more post about the "old guys" *****ing about the search function I am going to scream.

I used to moderate a website and you know who *****ed the most about the search function? Long time members like me who were burned out on the website.

One day I said to myself "You know what Blitz? You are burned out answering the same questions over and over.".

I wasn't a search Nazi but I realized I was burned out. The flame was gone and it was time for me to move on.

Also on the search functions: There is some really good advice on the internet and there is some really shitty advice on the internet. If one wants to weed through posts for 4 hours have at it. I, as a member of this site don't care if somebody posts something that "is available via search". Maybe the advice in 50% of the search hits is crap advice.

And as I have said before: If you see a post asking "What is the best oil?" and you are an "old guy" tired of answering that, don't click the right mouse button. Easy huh?

I just went back and counted and in the past two weeks I have answered 17 questions. .. through private messages. Nine of these questions were from people with ZERO POSTS. This is not uncommon for me. These people join, lurk and ask questions out of the public eye. Most of these questions are after they have tried and failed to find an answer. NOT because they are lazy asses and use some lame excuse that "the search function sucks." Newsflash: Google "5th Gen 4Runner" and ask a question. It will bring yoi right here with a pertinent thread and even the post number. All you guys who ***** at me and others for telling people to search? Try answering a question sometime. Spend an hour or two at night figuring it out so you can give the poor guy facts instead of an opinion. Maybe try doing a mod and documenting it with great pictures and write ups ala [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] and others. Spend a few weeks reading posts to get a better understanding of a problem. After you do that THEN come back and call me out.

Ironically enough I went in knowing I was going to spend way too much money on mods... somehow I am still at only tires, lift, front bumper, skids, and some minor other things. LoL Though once I decide when/if I am moving to Bend I have a feeling I will be plunking down a few grand or more on mods.

This is my 2nd 4Runner. The first was a '04 sport which I had for nearly 200k miles. My goal is to keep it simple with only the stuff I need. I don't like the overly modified look. For what I do, a 3 inch lift and some 285's will get me where I'm going, but keep my truck looking classy as a daily driver.

I lasted about 10 months..always said I was keeping it stock. Then something happened; just said what the feck and got a lift; new Skinny's and roof-rack and didn't tell the wife until it was done. Best/Odd bit is my wife said "now I have a *****in truck!!" howz does it become her truck after the mods? Lol, love the forums!

Agreed, you make very valid points, well said. I also suffered from website burnout on another site and simply quit logging on. I am a noob to this site, but far from a noob to Toyota or sites exactly like this one. I came from TundraTalk, senior member (6 years) there and this site is no different then that one. Everyone has something to contribute, some more and some less and some need to simply be ignored. I have searched several threads on here and in some you get conflicting information, try searching to find out if the TRD PRO shocks are in fact adjustable. :bash: I have been modding cars/trucks for more than 25 years starting on an Isuzu I-mark, which is so old many of you all have never heard of this car ever. In short, this site is awesome because of the people on the site and their contributions. If you no longer can deal with it, just ignore it and talk with your buddies and everyone will be happy. Noobs, use the search engine, when you get frustrated and can't find an answer just ask me, I am happy to answer if I can.
