washing seat belts?

My belts are pretty scummy and not retracting very well anymore.
Has anyone done this? I just don't want to mess up the belts or the mechanism in side.

I did it. Made them retract a little better. Just pull it ALMOST (leaving some pull room in case it locks) all the way out and put a pair of vice grips on the belt so it doesn't retract. Let it dry for a day or two. Also, depending on the year you have, it may have an exploding squib in it so disconnect your battery first before disconnecting the yellow connection.

Soak 'em and scrub them with a stiff bristle brush. Repeat as necessary. A power washer works too.

I did mine with Meguiars Convertible top cleaner. Worked great and didn't have to remove them from the truck.

Hi,
I did experienced the same issue. I read somewhere the solution is silicone in spray. One has to spray generously with silicone all over the belts since they became really wet, then wipe with soft cloth and wait up to 48 hours for the belts to dry.
I used this methode and I can confirm - it really works. Pehaps I did not reached the "brand new car seat belts retract effect", but I noticed a dramatic change in behaviour of my belts.
The silicone I used does not leave greasy marks on clothes.

Yes, I have done this many times. Pull them out and clean/scrub with dish soap or even simple green type cleaner. Then spray armor-all or some type of water based interior dressing on them and wipe them with a towel. They will start retracting great again!

what is 'in silicone spray' ?. asking because I am about to do this. Which brand of silicone did you use? how can a silicone soaked belt not leave residue on clothes?

I have a silicone spray lube (Liquid Wrench, think) but there's no way the stuff I've got doesn't leave a residue.
