watches...

Ugh!......I bow to you all in disgrace and lay down my sword.....I'm doing exactly what I said I wouldn't.....my integrity is lost.....I saw this Tag at a local brand-name jeweler today at a nice price of $1900 for a $2850 watch brand new Aquaracer, fell in love, and had them set it aside for purchase tomorrow..... It's a Tag Aquaracer Calibre 5 500m.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and feedback. It's the one on the left.....

That date window is unique! Very nice find. I would make sure that your shop is an AUTHORIZED Tag dealer (AD) and that this is a NEW watch. Old Tags have had issue with the crown threading from what i heard in the past. This new Aquaracer seems to have stronger crown construction/design due to deeper depth. But, just to be on the safe side, i would make sure that you're buying from an AD for potential warranty purposes. In addition, if your Tag runs too slow or too fast, then you can send it to Tag for regulation (free) IF you bought from an AD. So, more peace of mind.

Caliber 5 is ETA-2824 with Tag's beautification process. :) It is a stout and reliable movement with a long long history (dating back to the 1960s i think). Note that this Caliber 5 in your Tag is not a chronometer. Not a big deal! Basically, to keep price low, Tag chose not to send your Tag movement to COSC for certification as a chronometer. So, it may mean nothing (most of the case) or that Tag may not be strictly regulating your watch to COSC standard (-4/+6 seconds per day) when it leaves the factory. Either case, this brings back having a warranty (thus buying from AD) is important!

Is your Tag metal or rubber band? Either way is good...fabulous design! And you should see a huge difference in quality when compared to your Citizen.

Remember, it does not hurt to haggle some more to get the price lower. Luxury watches are not moving fast these days with the poor economy.

Good luck dude...and happy time tomorrow!!

LOL... so you caved to forum pressure?

I think whichever watch you like is the best one for you. YOu are the one wearing it so you have to live with it. Now once you start wearing it, you will NOT stop looking at other guys watches now.

You've been bitten.

That is a very nice looking watch. I really do like it, but the list of things I'd rather spend $2K on is too long to list. Then again, I agree with your earlier post about having multiple less expensive watches. Of course, I blow my money on things other people probably don't have a need for as well...

It's a Jared Jewelers location. A national chain. They are certainly an AD.

They had it at that price because apparently that model is being discontinued or otherwise changing somehow. There aren't many left and if you look at some of the trusted Internet outlets for the same watch they are most often unavailable or out of stock.

The watch has a stainless steel bracelet and is nice and hefty. You can tell it is solidly constructed. I was interested in some Tissots and Victorinox watches they had there and there really is no comparison to the Tissots. The Victorinox watches compared much better and were very nice. I was really only there to see the Tissots and Victorinox's when this one caught my eye.

I love to haggle but they don't engage there. The price is the price basically +/- 10%. I went home, researched it, and found it to be a good price from an AD so I called them back to have them put it aside for me.

Just wanted all your input on the watch, see if there are any pitfalls, and overall deal. Seems good to me and all your input is very welcomed. That's what truck forums are for, right? :)

Thanks

Damn...

You may think I'm nuts but sadly I think I'm returning this baby tomorrow. I usually to my homework but apparently I wasn't thorough enough on this one since I just read many, many posts on Amazon and watchuseek.com claiming major issues with the screw in crown on this thing stripping for many, many people and multiple times per watch.

Are high-end watches like high-end cars (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc. ) where people are so enamored with the brand that they overlook the quality issues?

I want bulletproof and this doesn't seem bulletproof at all. For those of you the know watches, am I overly worried about this?

Thoughts?

Yeah, like I wrote above earlier, it is a problem with older Tags...but I had hope that Tag would have changed/upgraded the design with the new Aquaracer???? The posts that you see...are they with your Aquaracer design (500m)??

I am sure that if you search Seiko or Citizen or Timex, then you will see that these watches have structural issues too...but most of the time, people blow it off because they are "disposable." Many early Seiko Kinetics, for example, may have a bad capacitor. (Mine so far is OK at 12 years.)

I think that the major maintenance with these automatics in general is the need for regular servicing...every 5 years or so.

I would make sure that the crown thread issue applies to YOUR Aquaracer first and foremost.

Does Jared allow you to return a Tag for full refund?? That's nice if they do. Most of the time, it is not returnable because you have already filled out the warranty paperwork etc.. To get it back and re-display it, then they would have to contact Tag for another set of paperwork for the watch. If you can return it, then I guess that this is where Costco gets their watches! :D

One minor thing...the crown is rarely used in an automatic unless you don't wear it regularly or if the rate is wild (e.g. runs really fast or slow per day).

Good luck.

P.S.: My Rolex TOG has been excellent. It is a 2006 model...and is running fine (+3 sec/day). No hiccups.

Man, I am so bummed. It is an issue with the 500m and my model which has reached end of life for a slightly new design/look. The issue can happen whenever you have to screw it back in (like even when you are just adjusting the minute hand), not only when you need to wind it. For a watch of this price (really ANY price) its a disgrace. I couldn't believe how many complaints there were and how consistent and reoccurring they were even after the first repair.

Jared will give me a full refund up to 30 days. We'll see the actual experience of exercising this policy tomorrow. Policy says watches are to be "unworn and unmodified" and I wore it out of place after they adjusted it. If they give me a problem, they will have a 4th gen 4Runner in their showroom.

Good thing I'm not too attached to it.

For the record, I wouldn't worry too much about it if you can't return it fit whatever reason. Looks amazing, and worst case scenario you have to have it serviced or something to fix that down the road - right?

I tried to look for reviews and it doesn't seem extremely common. Potentially not as common as some of the reviewers lead you to believe at least.

Geez, Stanley, I thought that your panties being twisted from earlier has settled...I stand corrected. My current Rolex that I am wearing is a Turn-o-graph from 2006. No issue. My other Rolex that my wife wears is a Yachtmaster from 2004. And yes, at the 5 year point, it started to act funny. Remember, that YachtMaster has a very small movement...and thus, may not be as durable as the fullsize movement in men's watches, even though it is one of the top ladies' movement in the world. Since being serviced by Rolex in 2010, it is fine. And yeah, I have had issues with Omegas. At the end of the day though, I love my Rolexes because of the quality feel that they impart...the solid and well-designed band (esp. my Turn-o-graph!)...the shine...and the mechanical heart.

BTW, not sure if you realize this but my Seiko is a KINETIC. Your Seiko 5 is mechanical. It does not mean that my Kinetic's reliability will apply to your Seiko 5.

Take a look at these....

TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500m Automatic SS- Screw in crown problem??- HELP PLEASE?

Anyone Else Having Problems With Aquaracer 500M Screw Down Crown?

Screw-down Crown Suggestions

Problem with crown not tightening down

Its ridiculous. And I'm pissed at myself for not checking on this beforehand.

Man... All this talk of 'high end' sounds like 'staus' rather than the quality of the movements... Just saying..

Or rarity, materials, etc. Am I right? What's not good about the movements in my Movado, it my Seiko 5? Not "high end", but not paying out the a** with my middle class money either :)

And YOU know much about quality of a movement? Your post sounds of pure ignorance to me...and playing the "poor old me" card won't work either! Kinda reminds me of someone else who always play a different kind of card! :D

Why do you think Seiko 5 costs a dime and a penny? And why does Seiko make their own high-end movement in their Grand Seikos? Ahh, according to you, for people with more money than brain? Stupid assumption, Stanley.

I'm still wondering why you say some pieces are "high end" and I still say it's status, rarity, "maker" (some old a** dudes hand making/etc) that makes a watch "high end". Kinda like a ridiculous designer purse for women, or all their "high end" clothes.... Tell me I'm wrong?

Define a "watch guy" for me please... Do you mean that I'm not a "watch snob"??

Yup, definitely from a guy who knows all about mechanical movements and quality! No, you are ignorant of mechanical watches.

Kinda like a Civic owner with coffee can muffler thinking that his Civic is just as good as any BMW, Mercedes, Lambos...simply because his Civic has a gasoline motor like everyone else!

At the end of the day, not many people even really know any difference. I won't bother you on this thread any longer..

You mean, someone like you? Why are you still in this thread? I tried being nice to you...but you won't let go. Sad.

Geez, I have HEARD about it, but never really looked into it...but damn! :( Well, I guess that is where Tag saved a few pennies on to keep the price reasonable (relatively speaking).

Good luck (in returning it!).

Lol - yeah no s*** on the Kinetic.

And my "arrogant" statements really weren't what you make them out to be. All is well though man. And for the record the only part I meant I was being sarcastic about earlier, was money. I meant everything else. Not hiding behind anything. And it's not a pissing match between my watch and those you mentioned. But those you mentioned are not 66x better, by any stretch of means. How much better is debatable though.

I'll just never spend a huge bundle of money on a watch. And that's cool, and also cool you do. (It really is). Don't consider this backtracking from me, but I'm sure there is something quite glorious about wearing a high end watch. I really do.

It's almost looking and sounding silly that I'm talking about a $150 watch here - but the cool thing is, that to me, it's all I need, and plan to have it for years. It will be worth it to me even if I need 5 "servicings", lubes, or (like what happened to yours): crystal replacement over the years. Doesn't matter how much it cost to me, but what it represents - ya know? Lol I'm not trying to cheerlead for Seiko 5's but just saying a watch is what it is to its owner. And to me it's all the "high end" I need. And from what I've read and researched, it might just keep going for years if I'm lucky without all the fuss. Most likely no more fuss than a Rolex owner goes through for probably 1/30th or 1/66th the up front cost. The servicings will be worth it still rather than dispose. And I still get the "artsy" glory of wearing a fully automatic watch.

Like I said, my wife also got me a Movado for our wedding present 5 years ago. Amazingly, that thing is still ticking away on the battery it came with (somehow). Yeah its a little feminine, and small, and the movement might be "cheap quartz" bla bla, and I don't wear it often, but that thing means a lot to me anyway.

Jusy saying people can get nice watches that are just as nice to wear for years by spending much less. Such as your $700 (or whatever) Kinetic.

Backtracking & self-justification. Again, that Civic owner analogy applies perfectly to you. Again, why are you still in this thread? Clearly, you do not share the enthusiasm that most of us here have for watches...and just about insult everyone on here who has bought a nice mechanical watch. You have your Seiko5 already...the pinnacle of mechanical watches! Time for your exit as you promised earlier.

BTW, you do realize that there are even CHEAPER mechanical watches than your Seiko5 that are higher in quality, esp. with the bracelet.

Good god...

I love how you use the "poor me" card and your family in your arguments.

DUDE! Give it a rest!

I think my purpose in this thread should be obvious.... If hikenbike listened to his own views and the ones I share, he would have saved a bunch of money and/or not have to go return his watch. (Doesn't mean he won't do more research this time and buy a well rated watch expensive watch next time, but that's beside the point.) Just because someone spends more money on a watch doesn't mean they bought a hassle free end - all - be - all watch.

Your arguments mean nothing Thai and you keep saying the same things over and over and over and over.

The thread was opened to discuss all watches by the way. Someone report my posts then and get me banned or something. But you're still the aggressor as usual... I came back joking around showing your old posts and you got defensive.

And I mentioned my daughter to explain why it took so long to post my reply, and missed your other post, you clown
