I've had a couple Hamiltons with the 2894 movement, and a PO with the 2500 movement. Along with various other stuffs and things. Perhaps it's sentimental, but when push came to shove, it was easier for me to be ok with selling my PO rather than my Hamiltons (my first mechanicals). All 3 were within a couple seconds of each other, but both Hamiltons combined cost me less than half of what the PO did. I loved that PO, and it took a beating. But so did the Hamiltons. I actually managed to scratch the crystal on my PO, which bugged the hell out of me.

Last trip to Vegas, wifey and I went to the Richard Mille shop. Those things are sexy. I could just stare at the movement and be content. Wifey was like, "why are these so expensive?" No clue. To put things into perspective, between us, we have about $40k in bicycles...her road bike eclipses $10k at the retail level. I can justify that all day long. Why this RM pushes $100k? No clue.

We then ended up stopping at a shop that had my grail(s)...an IWC Top Gun Fliegerchrono and Le Petit Prince Big Pilot. I almost talked myself into that Big Pilot. But then started asking myself, "why is this so expensive?" Ended up walking out. No regrets.

Maybe some day. Till then, these beater Hamiltons will do the job.

For me, IWC is on same level as Breitling. Nice watches for sure. But, internals are generic movements. I am not sure if IWC has started to make their own movements, but for a long time, they use generic ETA movements. I am OK with ETA in sub-1000 watches, but for what IWC charges for their watches, having an ETA movement is unacceptable.

I don't think that your PO crystal is any weaker than Hamilton's...just bad luck that it crashed into something on same level as sapphire or harder. REMEMBER, PO has anti-reflective coating...it could be THAT is scratched and not the crystal itself underneath.

IMO, Rolex, Patek, Audemars Piguet, and maybe a few others that i have not mentioned are the only ones that are "worth it" because they also hold their value very well.

some IWCs use in-house, but yeah, quite a few are modified ETAs. pretty sure the BP is an in-house movement. that said, i do believe i'd prefer a COSC certified ETA over most in-house movements. another grail (i apparently have a lot) is the older IWC Aquatimer with the locking, rotating bezel...titanium. I don't believe IWC used any creative marketing to disguise the fact that watch used an ETA movement.

Why all the IWC grails? The flieger was the first auto to ever make me say "wow. what watch is that?"

COSC is only guaranteed for year one. And with all mechanicals, their rate/precision goes down from there. So, COSC is a good thing but of limited benefit over time...thus, no "lasting" value. An in-house movement with special parts (e.g. Parachrom/Si hairspring, unique escapement, etc) is what i care about and is worth its weight in gold IMHO and is something that will always remain unique/special about that watch...and 99% of such movements are COSC-certified anyways.

Well, a famous small (exotic almost) Swiss company has now done the unthinkable:

Constructed from solid 18-karat white gold, the Swiss Alp Watch measures in at 38.2mm by 44mm, with a depth of 10.3mm. That's comparable to the 42mm Apple Watch, which is 35.9mm by 42mm with a depth of 10.5mm. It comes with a beige kudu leather strap with a white gold pin buckle.

It is advertised as an attack on Apple Watch and other smartwatches.

But, you mock someone with a parody or a joke, not by creating, designing, advertising and producing a fully fledged product that costs five figures.

This is an imitation. If anything, this validates Apple's design! Swiss apparently is quite scared of smartwatches, primarily the Apple Watch. Their shipments have declined rapidly since Apple Watch came out.

Based on the video, we should throw away our computers and get back the typewriter or throw away smartphones and bring back the flip phone!

This is my favorite watch. The Casio G-Shock GulfMasters. Works good, looks great and has features I use. I've been wearing G-shocks for decades and I've never had one stop working. I still have all the G-shocks I've bought, although the oldest one (from the '80s) has lost all of it's rubber case due to dry rot. So it's just the stainless steel case, and looks ugly. But it still works so I'll keep it.

Got Apple's Classic Buckle black leather (2nd gen)...after trying cheap Chinese bands (from Amazon), i bit the bullet and got official Apple leather band with classic buckle. And let me tell you, there is no comparison...Apple leather and buckle are amazing in quality down to the smallest details! The leather itself is soft, perfectly thick (without being overly sporty thick), and luxurious in feel. The buckle is a work of art...see how it is attached to the leather (no visible pin!)...the buckle itself beautifully shaped (no seams, no rough edge) and perfectly sized for the leather band.

Ok...i asked this question before...why NYLON? Looks? Is there a use for nylon band? Does it not stink up after a while from sweat?
