Water Ingress

Had some rain yesterday. I park the Runner outside, on the driveway, on an incline.

I just opened the rear hatch to find plenty of wetness.

While the rear floor mat is very wet, it came from above...

I don't detect any wetness in the headliner though. The sun/moon roof is closed, and so is the rear window...

As far as I can tell, rear seats forward is fine (dry). Any ideas?

EDIT/ADD: Looking at the roof rack now as a possibility...

Gotta get that water to egress!

Another suspect is a clogged sunroof drain, there are 4 of them, 1 at each corner. Luck. :cowboy:

Thanks. Will open it now and do a drain test. Didn't have this issue with some heavier rains a couple months back. Have not had the moon/sun roof open to get clogged with stuff too.

I did remove the cross members on the rack, but thought everything was snug...

2 front drain tubes, drain into your rocker panels. If you remove the kick panels you’ll find a sponge. Behind it here are tubes. That’s where it drains. Then there is a drain tube under rear passanger side. And the other one, idk.

You could have a bad hatch seal ? Maybe trunk wasn’t closed all the way.

I feel like that’s a major issue with these trucks. People always seem to find water inside somehow.

2 front drain tubes, drain into your rocker panels. If you remove the kick panels you’ll find a sponge. Behind it here are tubes. That’s where it drains. Then there is a drain tube under rear passanger side. And the other one, idk.

The rear door is actually well-designed in my opinion, there is a lip and a seal and and the water runs into the crack between the door and the body and in the channel created by the lip/seal then down and out. A leak here would not likely end up on the privacy shield UNLESS the rear window was open

Roof drain issues (clogged) could cause this but the headliner would be wet. My sunroof seal leaks in one spot and I have learned how to circumvent it.

Get a spool of weed wacker filament and chase it down all your sunroof drain tubes. If it is the seal, worst comes to worst, you can tape it off or silicone it shut for the winter or throw a tarp over the car.

Did you close up the roof rack holes when you removed the rack?

Another leak point is the rear spoiler. Those rivnuts rust out. THIS is very possibly your issue, and also maybe your rear cargo light is dafuq

Poured water into each back corner of the moonroof, and it immediately streamed to the rear interior, back windows. Wow. It was so quick, like it was designed that way... The headliner is bone dry.

I shot some compressed air into the drain hose on the passenger side, by the tailpipe. According to Tim's video, the other drain on the driver's side requires a bit more work to access.

Just one of the few reasons I didn't want a limited... I'll likely put some painter's tape around the perimeter for now.

With the car on an incline, nose up, and quite a bit higher than the rear, I was pretty certain the leak was further forward, so the rear spoiler didn't seem like a good candidate here...

It really didn't rain all that much either. The rear floor is soaked though, like when I funneled-in the water. I don't know the moonroof all that well, but is it possible that it looked closed, but was not entirely? The kids were playing with it a few weeks back, so now I'm wondering. When it closes, it looks like it is done, then pulls downward with a final movement. Maybe that last step was not completed, and that made a difference. I'll crack open the owner's manual.

I'm not sure if I have an obstruction at this point, or if I just overwhelmed the plumbing with the moonroof not being properly closed and with a funnel today. Heavier rains coming on Monday, so I'll put more time into it...

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if this happened before, but I didn't notice it because I wasn't using the privacy shield, which made it obvious (puddle), and made for splattering. Maybe my headliner was not wet because of the incline. Not sure. A bit of mystery at this point...
