Water Pump installation

I am replacing my Water pump tomorrow. I have a new gasket that is metal and has rubber in the groove on both sides of the gasket. Do I need to use FIPG on top of the rubber or is the rubber itself enough to seal the pump? The FSM says to put "seal packing in the groove"
There is already rubber in the groove. Thanks in advance.

The manual says to do that because originally that is what they used. Now they come with an actual gasket so you don't have too. Much cleaner and even seal.

I have noticed that Toyota has updated several things like that on our vehicles. It's nice to know that even though they aren't made anymore, Toyota is still figuring out ways to make them better.

Different groove. The old water pump had a groove in the mating surface of the water pump where the FIPG went and no gasket at all. The ones that have the gasket have no groove at all on the pump. Like the others said, no sealant needed.
