water pump replacement

Hey guys, I am new to the forum and have a question I hope you all can help me with. I have a 1991 4Runner with a 3.0 that needs the water pump replaced. I don't have the time, tools, place to work, etc. to do it myself right now. I have purchased the water pump, and a local shop has quoted me $400 to install it. Is it just me or does that sound like a ridiculous price? All opinions welcomed.

Seem high just for labor. Dealers charge about $600 for a timing belt and water pump.

How many miles do you have?

You may want to look into doing the timing belt as well. I think your truck has a timing belt.

It has 265,000 but was rebuilt with 183,00. The mechanic said that he has to remove the radiator and timing cover and basically dismantle the front of the engine to do it. He said that the pricing system that they use says that it is a 6 hr job and he is only charging me for 5 hrs which will save me $75. So it is $375 plus all of their taxes and supplies. It is my understanding that most shops use the same computer system to price their jobs out so I do not know that I will be able to find it cheaper any place else unless they charge less than $75/hr. Sure seems like a lot to replace a water pump, but I know from experience that working on these things is a pain.

I'd replace the timing belt with 80k on it. It really is not any additional labor, just a part.

You have to remove a lot, but no need to remove the raidator....

We had a 1990 pickup with the 3.0, the radiator doesn't need to be removed. The fan shroud, fan, timing belt cover, along with a whole bunch of other parts does though.
