water pump

i was just at the dealership and they said my waterpump was leaking and that i should have it replaced...so i asked how much it was, and the guy said about 700 because they have to take off the timing belt and something about the coolant...i declined, but i'm almost positive nothing is leaking in my car because my garage is very clean with a white floor, so i would notice a leak easily....

has anybody had their water pump replaced? and how much did you have to pay?

this was on a 99ltd 4x4 with 116,000miles

Have you checked the coolant level to verify the supposed loss?.

It could be leaking just a little bit, and running down the front of the block, and drying before it actually drips on the ground.

It's actually not uncommon for them to leak a bit.

$700 for waterpump install is ridiculous!

most people pay abour $350-450, depending on where they live.

116k? chances are it is leaking. I would go ahead and have it replaced, especialy if the timing belt hasn't been done. call around for a cheaper price, and have them recheck the side of'
the timing cover if they see any leaks. I would go to a shop with a good reputation.

yea, i'm gonna call around and see what the prices are...
so less then 200miles after my car was in the shop and had my MAF replaced, my check engine light came on again..ugh

The water pump is driven by the timing belt deep inside your engine. If you had a leak, it will be hard to detect. I wonder how they know the water pump is leaking? I know water pumps make a horrible sound if they are about to die.

One concern is if the pump is leaking it will get on the timing belt and possibly break it, leaving you stranded. 700 may be on the high side, but it can be that high. You replace the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, anti-freeze and while your at it all of the other belts that you had to take off.

If you go that route you may want to check other (non-dealership) repair shops for a better price.

I very recently paid $1000 to get the 90K service, timing belt, all drive belts and water pump all done at Toyota in SATX and included free rental car.
I had a $800 quote at an independant shop for same thing

i'm 19 so unfortunatly they wont give me a rental

tyr to negotiate price, but the rental car is only worth $25-30 anyway.
the independent shop did not offer a rental

since they are in there - do the timing belt, water pump, all belts at once
