This goes out to anyone, maybe you can help, but I'm working on getting the rear window down and I'm not having too much luck. It worked a day or two ago, but now is not operational. I thought that maybe the relay had gone bad, and I'm not hearing it click when I hit the switch to operate it. The key doesn't work either. I wanted to test and make sure I got power to the relay before I found another part, but when I tested, I found two constant power sources, and when using the key or either the window or wiper switch (wiper works), I wouldn't get any power input into the relay connection. So I'm fairly stumped on how that one works. The only thought was that maybe the power into the wiper is a momentary signal, and then it's open until you switch it off, when it gets another momentary signal and then is off again.
 
Tested the 4 relays for the back window unit, one was bad. I'll replace it tomorrow morning and plug it back in, hopefully that solves the problem.
 
Ok, I replaced the bad relay, didn't change anything. I'm looking for a way to test the back window motor. Does anyone have a schematic of how the power works back there?

If you just want to see if the motor works take the carpet panel off the door and unplug the motor. Take two pieces of wire and connect it to the plug on the motor side and use a 12v drill battery. touch the wires to the battery and if nothing happens swap pos and neg and try again.

I did that, and I'm getting lots of sparks when I do, other than that, nothing is happening.
 
I would also add if your replacing the motor try the camry/carolla window motor. I dont remember what years but from what i recall it should be a little faster up and down.
 
Ok, thanks! I'll post a pic of the wiring that I'm running to the motor just to make sure I have it correct, and then I'll start looking for a motor.

One thing that I'm still confused about is that I wasn't getting any power fluctuations at the relay connectors when I tested them with a voltmeter. I hooked it up, and then I tested each pin socket with the window button pushed. Thoughts there?
 
Not really, aside from either removing the roof if yours is an '89 or older! That was one of the issues with the 4runner, you couldn't get anything large out of the back if the window wasn't able to roll down. You can get it to open either since the window is in the channel, so you have to roll it down to get the back open.

If you can't get the window down while putting direct power to its contacts, the motor is probably jammed, especially if you're getting sparks when you touch the contacts. That tells me there's still power going through the brushes.

I'd tap on it with a wrench or small hammer (just like the failing starter trick!), try to see if that frees up the motor just enough to get it going again, but be forewarned, it may not go back up afterwards! It will be easier to fix though, if you can get the tailgate opened, rather than trying to work on it while laying in the vehicle on your side!
 
Ok, so my alternator tensioner decided that it wanted to unbolt itself the other day, so I took off the distributor, ps pump to get to it, and when I put everything back it cranked but didn't start. I figured it was the dis. out of alignment, so I found tdc on the compression stroke and matched the timing marks up, made sure that the dist. was in position to spark #1 first, and cranked again. Did this three times with no luck... Any thoughts?

89 4runner, 4 cyl, 22re.
 
Won't start off and on

My 89 4Runner has been running great, but over the weekend, there's been two times that it's been parked for 5-30 min, and coming back out it won't start. Turns over, has spark, and I think it has fuel, but I'm not sure how to check that.... The first time it started after trying to fix it for about an hour, but I have no idea why. The next time I didn't have time to mess with it, so it's still in the parking lot. Any thoughts? I'll check for fuel this afternoon, but I feel like it's loose wiring or something along those lines, but I have no idea where to even start....
