Those men were truly remarkable people. In fact I truly in my heart believe the men and women who served during WWII were "THE" last great generation!. Now please I'm not trying to discredit the men and women who have serve America sense WWII because any individual who serves is a remarkable person and deserves fully the gratitude of every American. However the people that lived during WWII were just a different breed of individuals. They struggled behind the scene in every day life to find a way to help the men fighting against the enemies of freedom. It's sad to see that generation dying off, so many stories left untold because it just purely hurt so much to have to relive what horrors they endured during that time. The men who fought and the women who supported them and fixed them up if they found themselves in the need of medical care, would leave their families, sometimes knowing that they would not hear from each other for months and some even years. They fought bravely without modern day emergency evacuation, without a reliable supply of food, without a ready supply weapons and support of additional forces.
Today I heard on the radio, a letter written by General Eisenhower his "letter of failure". A letter he wrote before the attack of D-Day, knowing the odds were stacked against them he vowed to keep pursuing the attack till they were none left to fight he wrote how if they failed it was his decision and his decision only, if they failed it would be the 1,000 upon 1,000 of men lives on his shoulders to bear and he would proudly rest his soul with the men buried on the beaches. What honor our leaders showed, what leadership they portrayed, what respect they had for the citizens of America that answered the call of duty and risked everything they loved so that the world could have a chance to be as great as the greatest nation in the world. Yes, those people truly were remarkable soul. Character that is slowly fading from the people of today. How wonderful our nation would be if our leader of today carried themselves as the leaders of yesterday!
I for one, still tear up when I pledge allegiance to the flag, or sing the nation anthem at a sport event, or simply take a moment to silently give respect to the "Flag" because all of those represent the men and women who believed in freedom and still believe in freedom. Who still to this day unselfishly devote their lives to carrying out the duty of our armed forces. In doing so they are giving life back into those who have perished and giving a name to those who have left it all somewhere in the sands of a land far away!
Today on the day we give respect to the men of D-Day I just ask that we all take a moment to quietly remember why we are free to do what it is we do, and find a way to show you all still care for this country. Remember even those who were pushed from their lands, from land they held true to be theirs for generations. Remember even those brave soldiers risked everything to secretly translate communication behind the battlefield, men who used their native tongue and risk it all so we could win a war of nations. The proud men of the Navajo were probably if not certainly the reason we won the war, what a great honor they brought to their elders of the tribes, yes, it's sad to see them move on to what they hold true as a wonderful afterlife. That great bald eagle you may see soaring high in the deep blue sky just might be the men of the tribe.
Thank you
