Weight limit for roof using Yakima system

I am planning to "rack" my 2001 T4R Sport. I have removed my OEM crossbars and left only the OEM tracks. I have 48" load bars and (4) Yakima Viper trays from my Jeep. I know what parts I need to make my Yakima components fit my OEM tracks. My question is about load carrying capacity. Yakima tells me 100 lbs max and some threads here suggest 165 lbs max. What has been y'alls experience? I plan to carry 4 bikes only occasionally (annual Mountain MAN trip). Usually will only carry 2 or 3 mountain bikes up top though. By the time I add up weight of all the Yakima components, including the Hurricane fork-ups (so that handlebars will all clear) I would probably be close to half my weight limit! I know some of y'all have baskets on your roofs and carry full spares, tools etc...If I exceed 100 lbs by 10-15%, do you think I would be in range of a safe load for our roof? I envision my roof buckling in on me...

thanks for any input!

I have had at least 150lbs in my Yakima Loadwarrior before. More of the buys on here are running a spare (60lbs for 285 at leaste my Duratrac), w/ some tools, a high lift, etc. which is easily 100lbs. You should be fine man!

Right on man. That's what I was thinking but Yakima had me freaked out. I do notice that when I am waxing my roof it is flexy, but then my roof rack won't be sitting directly on my roof but rather on my load bars. Thanks for the input.

well your roof will be the weak link, but as long as you dont go over the 165lbs(thats what Toyota states the limit is) you should be fine, i made my own custom rack, and used too thick or a wall on my tubing and so my rack came out weighing close to 85lbs just by itself -it is a full length rack with expanded metal lath for a floor but still. it has sagged my roof from that much weight being up there 24/7. i plan on building another one and making it on a diet. but the amount of weight you are proposing you should have no problems at all.
