Weird insulation stuff: how necessary?

Wish I had a picture to describe this but it's in a weird place. Theres this insulation-looking stuff that follows my exhaust down along the firewall, its a goldish color but is charred and kind of falling apart. Its somewhat torn up and hanging down and sometimes smokes when it touches my exhaust pipe along the underside of the car. Would there be any harm to just tearing it all out?

Asbestos(?) heat shield to keep exhaust heat down in the cabin.

it's a heat shield. it Can Not be asbestos so dont worry there. I would repair/replace but remove.

Maybe replace with Refracil, a glass or silica fiber material.
