Hey guys,

Curious if you have any insight as to what might cause this noise? 98 auto Limited 3.4 engine. It's very very intermittent. I have only noticed it about 3 or so times over the past 1.5 years. Two times came after a water/mud crossing and the other when power washing the engine bay.

The ticking/tapping noise will happen in park, drive, reverse, or idle. It's pretty loud and is easily heard from the inside. It will get louder with an increase in RPMs in neutral, but goes away at about 3k RPM. Sounds like its coming from the belt or fan, but not sure. It only lasts about anywhere from 5-20 minutes and then goes back to normal.

Heres a short Youtube link of the sound from inside the T4R and outside.

Thanks

first guess sounds like the water pump bearing is shot. Have the timing belt, pulleys and water pump replaced with in the Last 90k miles?

Thanks, I'm not sure on the last time for any of those parts. It's at about 156k miles. Drive belts are starting to show wear as well. I've been pushing it off, but it's probably time to get in there and change them out with the pump.

Make sure to get oem or asin parts. There are several writeups and vidros on this forum for doing the job yourself and also recommendation for parts or timing belt kit.
