Mine does the same thing. and for the record, it's not just the 4runners. I had a 2013 Tundra that did the same thing andmy wife's 14' odyssey does something similar. Get used to because all of the auto's will be doing weird things as the EPA cracks down on auto makers.

Yep. I have the same noise. I've only owned my 2013 TE for a couple weeks and didn't really notice the irritating noises it makes until about a week after I bought it. This noise and the brake "squishy squeak" noise are pretty ridiculous IMO. The brake noise is far worse because it's all the time. I was gonna have my mechanic check it out and did some forum searching 1st and found out they are all normal......I'm coming from a pretty damn loud Subaru with all sorts of noises too and was stoked to have a quieter vehicle...I guess we will get used to them :/

I just discovered this after about 2500 miles of driving.

I oddly didn't notice it until I pulled into work on Tuesday and shut the car off. It sounded to me like a fan was being overworked or a relay was turning it off late.

Either way, mine matches the video on the first page.

Very odd.

My brake squish is hardly noticeable now at 5500 miles on the ODO but it was kind of annoying. As for the shutoff noise... I have noticed that since we bought the truck... and it's a crazy sequence of noises and flutters that was never really "unsettling" or annoying but it was and still is very noticeable.

Right after I park my 4Runner, the engine makes a somewhat weird noise, almost like a jet engine letting out it's last breath or, another way to describe it, it sounds like a robotic/mechanical decompression noise. It doesn't sound bad but was curious to see if anyone else has experienced this and if anyone knows what this noise is and where it is coming from.

I never experienced this on my prior Toyotas.

Hey Stockton,
That's the air injection pump (located right behind the PS headlight). I recently finished a dual battery install on my 2016 which involved relocating this pump up towards the firewall. Unfortunately the attached pic was taken after removal, but now you'll know where to look.

The pump is a little more audible when killing the engine now, but a small trade-off for that second battery. You can see the pump at the top of the second picture.

Quieting the fart sound at turnoff

Anyone out there who has figured out how to eliminate or quiet down the shut off fart sound witout making the check ungine light come on. I can quiet it buy unpluging the pump but it sets the check engine light? THANKS

I didn't hear anything in that video. The AIP noise is an electronic spinning type noise for about 1 sec just as you turn off the engine. At 13,000 miles, mine is starting to make a loud clicking noise at the end of the spinning noise, so I wounder if it is starting to go out.

Luckily All of the parts are pretty accessible, so when it does fail it won't be too hard to replace. The V8s that have the AIP, have it mounted under the intake manifold, which has to be completely removed to replace the failed AIP

Any developments on that click? Mine is doing the same thing. Thanks!

I took mine to the dealer because I was curious about it and they said it was normal for the newer toyota vehicles.

This is only place where I have found anything close to my problem.... 2004 limited. 210000 miles. When weather turned cool, I start engine and get a dull slap, slap, slap sound. Goes on for a minute or two and then gone. It actually will continue for bit if I turn the key off completely... which makes me figure it is not the engine or drive chain. I suspect something with the emissions control, but no idea what. Now that it is cool, it does this every time I start....

it is the air pump noise sometimes on engine shutdown. don't know why that air pump turns on often ..my other vehicles the air pump turns on at start up .then after 5 min shuts down..
a member may give info on why this air pump is on so much ?

The AIP winds down simultaneously with the engine. Is the noise you hear after the engine has been off for a minute?

I’m trying to figure out a noise that occurs about 2 minutes after shutting down that sounds like an oboe kind of like you describe. I’m thinking it might be a heat shield retracting or the diff breather slightly stuck and sucking air in as the gear oil cools.

I have hooked an external surge fuel tank that contains a fuel pump up to the my supercharger. The trigger for the relay that runs this pump is set to the Fuel Pump controller at the rear of the T4R. When I set it up I did not know this controller will energize the fuel pump in order to purge the evap tank on the car (or some other emission reason). Thus, I will find the external pump running when the car is shut off(even as late as 30 minutes after shut off). I would surmise that all T4Rs will run the fuel pump when the car is shut off based on that observation.

This is considered a normal operation as far as I can tell.

When it gets warmer, I will be moving the trigger so the external pump is not running randomly.

Will the AIP in 4Runners self destruct like it did in the Tundra, and then Toyota will refuse to honor the warranty?

Is this like a smog pump older trucks had, except that it only runs for a short time at start up and shuttown?

I remember having to gut the smog pump or finding an idler pulley to take its place on my FJ60.

IÂ’ve had a flap break inside the air valve on the driverÂ’s side, but this was at 2nd spark plug change at 240K miles. New valve was just over $300 from a dealership. Just 3 bolts to change out, but the harness plugs are poorly constructed and vulnerable to wires coming loose in the back of the plug which will cause codes to be thrown.
