Weird noise when making hard left

So the weird noise I was talking about in my other threadhttp://www.toyota-4runner.org/classic-t4rs/120421-getting-tires-soon-want-some-advice.html is happening when I am making a hard left/U-turn. It's a deep vibrating sounds (which is why I originally thought the tires were rubbing) and it only happens when I make hard left turns. When I first heard it I thought my rear diff was going out but since it doesn't make the sound when I make right turns I am hoping it is something a little cheaper to fix haha.

Anyone have any ideas?

FYI - I had just gotten new tires when I started noticing the sound and when I was there I had them mount a full size spare underneath the truck - could this possibly be the issue?

You sure it's coming from the back?
A bad front CV joint can make noise when steering is turned full lock.

At this point I am not sure about anything...I am going in for an alignment soon so I will have them check for any CV issues...

Even more likely is a worn or missing plastic cap on the steering stop esp if it has a metal scrapping sound.

I noticed my 91 makin' that grindy metal scrapin' sound the other day. I had gone over it when I picked it up and even had the local 'Yota dealership do a "courtesy check" on it and they found (other than it needing a bit of a tune and a good cleaning) nothing seriously wrong with it. And then the TAK-TAK-TAK noise when the wheel is fully cranked happens and I poop my pants thinking "That sounds like a couple hundred $$ I aint got". I will have to locate/eyeball the steering stop and confirm.

i bet it's your steering stop. try putting something rubber over it or grease it up a bit. Do you know where and what the sterring stops are?

For those unfamiliar with steering stops, it's circled in yellow.

There are 2 in each side.

I tried greasing the steering stops - 2 of the 4 caps were still in place. The noise is still there and it really sounds like it is coming from the back of the truck. Could it be the rear diff even though it doesn't make any sounds when turning right? Any other ideas?

Well, when you make a turn the vehicle weight shifts to the opposite side, so maybe a bad wheel bearing might make some noise, or a bearing in the diff.
You could get the rear wheels off the ground a spin them by hand and see if you can shear anything. Next maybe drain the diff and check for metal in the gear oil.

I drained the rear diff fluid the other day and it wasn't pretty. After replacing the fluid I demo'ed the noise for a couple local yota buddies and they didn't think it was the diff, but more and more it's looking like I am going to have to take a good sized hit to the wallet :dammit:

In the interest of exhausting all possibilities I will try recording the noise and posting it somewhere so hopefully someone will know what this is...

Hi guys,
Mine makes a hooting (like an owl) when I make even a wide left turn, not a metallic vibration. (Truck's garaged so I'm pretty sure no owl nested there
It started after I PB Blasted shackle and shock mounting bolts to prep for my Zuk. I do not see anything coming loose nor worn out bushings. Your thoughts?

In 2WD and with manual hub in un-lock, CV joint should not be working, correct?
