Weird Paint Issue

Hey guys,

I've drive an 06 Sport, and in the last year there have been some very bizarre and unique splotches of paint that have started to wear thin. They are scattered all over the car and I can't figure out what caused them and want your opinion on how to fix them.

Photos attached, any input would be appreciated.

My first thought was the paint had been "touched-up" and not prepped properly before the paint was applied, I say this because of how the spots look spider-webbed/cracked, which is common eventual effect of touching up paint without properly prepping the old surface.

OP, How long have you own this T4R?

mSteep06T4R - root cause of paint problems won't be determined, until the above question is accurately answered.

30 years ago, I purchased a used GMC truck because it was rust free / with LOTS of lifting paint, exactly like pictured.
- turned out, MAACO had done the cheap repaint
- and improperly sanded with only 3M abrasive pads
- for quickie & low cost body work, and proper preparation steps lack at every stage in repaint
Another possibility is a breakdown of the Ultra Violet agent, in the paint - only fix is a total strip & new paint job...old paint is too far gone/damaged.

Bought it in 09 from a dealer. To my knowledge, it only had 1 previous owner. Not sure if it's been re-painted or touched up, but that was my first thought.

It's all over the truck though: both passenger side doors, both rear ends, on the hatch, and driver's side passenger door.

Any thoughts on what to do about it?

At this point i think the only way to fix that would be good prep. And re-paint.

From the extent you describe I don't see anyway to save what you have left of the orignal paint, it sounds like you need a total repaint.

Depending on how much you like and how long you expect to keep your T4R you can get a paint job for as little as $200 to $300 or on up to a high quality paint job for several thousands $, if you don't expect to keep it much longer and if you're handy at painting you can try and do some touch up of the areas that are bad but it will be noticeable the closer you get to the touch ups.

If it were me and I didn't plan in keeping it much longer I would invest $300 to $400 in getting it painted which should look good for a couple of years so it would sell faster and for more money, If I were going to keep it I would either do the touch ups or invest a bit more to get a decent paint job done, depending in how I was using the truck.

^^ Typically it costs like $300 to get one bumper core painted (these days) / or $500 for a full hood repaint.

OP's 4Runner has failing paint, all over / the whole body needs stripped, to bare metal.
- epoxy primed
- urethane high build primed
- block sanded
- sprayed in base coat/clear coat

>> Paint stripping would easily cost several hundred dollars plus $1,000 in paint supplies alone.
- add the labor, other supplies & overhead / the quoted auto body job grows to $5,000 (quick enough)

Time to visit the dealership / maybe they will bear half the refinishing costs.

Check the Toyota owners website and carfax. It might not have been wrecked but since your a neighbor here in the midsouth maybe it had bad hail with cheap repaint.
