Weird phone call today about my 06 V8

Hey Guys,
I got a very random phone call today.. Wanted to see if any of you have experienced something like this. A guy reached out to me saying that we was trying to track down my 06 V8 Sport for one of the previous owners. He said that the the guy got it from his dad, who was the original owner, and it has sentimental value. I told him I am not interested in selling whatsoever and I searched for months trying to find a black V8 sport with low miles for several months. He said he is willing to offer $7500 and I told him there was absolutely no way. he kept tryin to get a number out of me and I said that I would have to get back to him and probably wouldn't be less than $20k. I know its not worth that much, but, honestly.. It is to me. I don't even know if I would do that. I searched for months for this 4Runner as I knew exactly what I wanted with low miles, no rust and great condition. I flew down to SoCal to buy it and drove it back.

Could this be some sort of scam???? Everything checked out. I just called the guy I bought it from 2 years ago and he said he bought it from a younger guy that received it from his dad.

I'd be a little nervous. They know your phone, and that you have it. Maybe consider a GPS tracker service for a few months or so. Peace of mind.
 
I probably would too but it just seems really odd and I don't want to get caught up in some weird scam attempt. I know people have their reasons for sentimental value, but its an 06 4Runner.. It's not a 67 Mustang or other classic vehicle.

No one is going through that much trouble to steal a 13 year old SUV. Nothing rare about it...

How did they obtain your phone number? Did the previous owner give it to them or something?

Don't sell it. There's tons of accounts of people who regret selling cars they loved. The people calling you are one example, and you'll be another example if you sell it.

However, judging you by your signature youve already owned and sold a 2nd, 3rd and 5th gen. So after you sell your current one, you'll just need to buy a 1st gen and sell it and you'll have a 4Runner ownership sweep! Maybe the only person to do it. Contact Guinness.

I have no idea. I should have asked but I was so caught off guard. The guy I bought it form knew nothing about it. I don't want to sell it because I finally found the ONE that I really love.

Long story short, Started with a beat up 2nd gen when I was young and broke. Drove it until it the 2nd head gasket went out on the 3.0.. Bought a 04 4th gen.. put a good 60K miles on myself and and sold it for about what i bought it for and got the 5th gen itch.. Bought a TRD pro and hated it... Sold it after 25k miles for the same price bought it for (Glad I bought the cement). Now Im back in a 4th gen and couldn't be happier.

Some of your ideas may not be so far-fetched. My dad used to work in the insurance industry and was pretty good at busting people with fraudulent claims. One time evidence surfaced in our own garage...

Through his work my father had learned of a good deal on a BMW 733i imported from Germany and bought it. I thought it was cool that the labels on the instrument panels were in German. After my dad had driven it for awhile one of the hoses burst and sprayed coolant into the car. My dad lifted the carpet to clean up the mess and discovered compartments cut out of the floor that were used for smuggling drugs into the country. Case re-opened!

When I was a little older I bought a low-mileage Nissan Sentra from a small dealer. I later received a letter from our Department of Motor Vehicles saying they were investigating the guys who sold me my Nissan for odometer fraud. Turns out my car had more miles than I thought! I took it back to the dealer and told them about the letter and said I wanted my money back. They were super nervous and bought my car back. I think they ended up in prison.

I’m not suggesting that money is hidden in your 4Runner, or love letters, or DNA that would solve a crime, but who knows? The guy probably just misses his V8.

I would think the only way they could have gotten your number is from the dealer/seller you bought it from, there could be some kind of privacy, client/customer confidentiality law broken here, or not, might want to check into that.

I worked at a local avionics shop in the 70's in Florida. They called on us to work on a DC6 (DEA found it filled full of square grouper) that was chased and abandoned at a grass field. The next morning after we started working on it we found all the interior walls had been ripped out of it.

The owner that I bought it from was a really honest guy. When I called him and asked he was very surprised. I will call the guy the guy back that called me today and find out.

Drop it and move on, unless you're going to give him a price to buy it back. Then I'd still drop it.

Why poke a potential hornets nest? or stick your meat in a lions den?
