Welding on sliders tomorrow ????

Is there anything I need to worry about when welding on my truck tomorrow. Im a little worried about welding that close to the gas tank. Also is there anything I should be worried about melting?

No. Just be sure to leave about a 3/8" gap between the body pinch weld and the sliders. Also follow basic welding prep - cleaned bare metal surfaces...

Yeah, I was too. I kept a fire extinguisher close at hand, said a little prayer and went at it. After you finish your beads close to the tank, if you really want to play it safe, you could spray water up between the tank and the body. Just in case. I didn't, but I kept an eye on the area afterwards.

Simply put… Yes.
The part you're welding is on the other side of the frame from the tank so unless you have some sort of leak you'll be fine.
As stated above, plate the frame with diamond shaped plates to spread the load.
Set the slider on jack stands or ???, cut the legs to length, tack the legs to the sliders, then pull them to finish weld. This is a great time to paint the hard to get to spots next to the body. Then burn em on and finish painting.
Not a hard job, but way more time consuming than most people think.

If you can weld a plate and gusset to the leg and then weld that to the frame, it will disperse the energy from an impact to a larger area on the frame.
When welding on any vehicle, I always unhook the battery. Some say that when the battery is connected, the computer is at risk.

I've been told that it's fine to leave the battery hooked up but my experience says that it should be disconnected. Good advise Gerdo!

I had a 91 bronco that I designed front and rear bumpers for. My dad welded them on for me with the battery still connected and shortly after I started getting weird issues. I threw a bunch of parts at it until I took it to a shop. They couldn't figure it out for a while until they changed out the ECM for a used one. The problems never resurfaced again after that and I'm convinced that me leaving the battery hooked up caused me all that headache.
 
A lot of it has to do with how close your ground is to your welding area. Of course unhooking the battery is so easy that there's no reason to not do it just for the added safety.
