Well... I got rear ended today, but....

So I got rear ended by a lady going at least 50mph. It was the worst pain i've ever felt, and I was rushed to the hospital.


In any case, once I got released from the hospital, I saw my car. There really isn't that bad of damage to say it was 50mphs, since it only looks like some paint had been rubbed off on my rear bumper. However, briefly looking under, the wheel well, and exhaust had been bent up. The trailer hitch is bent as well. Are there any other places I should look so that I can point it out to the insurance agent/body shop?

Careful measurement of your frame should be done. I assume the shop will do that but it wouldn't hurt to check if you're able to.

The obvious things like leaks and rattles and ticking.. you basically have a blank check. Anything listed could be a result of the crash now.

Any where I can check what the measurements of the frame should be?

Are you saying i need to drive the car too? I just don't want to drive something that could be badly damaged.. The car looks okay, but it could be worse... or im just thinking too much..
 
If you can get someone to help (not sure what kinda shape your back is in after that wreck) I'd just run a tape measure from corner to corner. Then compare with the opposite measurement.

I'm sure the shop will look for all this though-they want that insurance gold!

I'll get my brother to help me out, since I cannot move at all without pain. Sucks so much..

Interesting, didn't know that shops will try to get money off insurance. I'm assuming from their insurance, right?

If your spare tire is stored under the body between the frame rails, check the spare for leaks and also check to be sure it did not get pushed forward and bend your panhard rod.
 
Well, if the shop finds more things to fix, and they get to do the fixin' then that's pretty much a guaranteed payment. Which is way better than a questionable customer

50MPH is a pretty catastrophic hit... I'd assume she submarined under your truck, giving you a hard kick upwards.

There's no exhaustive list of components that would be probably damaged. I recall reading that the factory hitch on the 4th gen (perhaps specifically the V8, someone chime in here), functioned as a frame cross member. The entire rear suspension, its connections to the frame, the axle itself, and the entire frame from the rear axle back is at risk of being damaged.

Realistically, a frame rack and a very good shop is going to be needed to determine the real extent of damage. And then it's likely a frame replacement if there's any damage more than a tweak.

Trucks are replaceable... Please worry about your back and health! I wish you the best and hope you heal quickly.

Yea, the reason why cops and I were impressed was because they literally thought it was a small accident.. If the other car wasn't there, you'd think it was a 10-20mph accident, since there is only paint from her car on my bumper, and bent exhaust. The hitch and spare tire(I assume) took most of the damage. It did kick me upwards which was the scariest thing i've felt.

Damn.. Guess i'll try to find a shop with a frame rack.. I was hoping it was a separate piece.. Oh well..

Thank you! I will be seeing a doc shortly and getting my back reassessed. Just been a miserable week so far trying to keep living... LOL
 
Glad that you are for the most part okay.

Now, the one thing I will tell you, is to DO NOT skip out on any medical. All of your bills will be covered in the end by the other person's insurance. So get any and all medical examinations you may need including CAT scans and MRIs Etc.

A big payout now sounds good, but it won't pay you for your medical bills 20 or 30 years down the road, when the problems start to show up again. So make sure you get yourself checked out really, really well.
