well this sucks ...Borla

driving home from work the other night and hear a really loud "pang" sound, like hollow metal on something very hard. didn't think too much of it. sometimes i hear the same sound when i rock gets kicked up into the muffler. so i get home and walk away from the T4R, look back and see the passenger side portion of my Borla dual exhaust about 2 inches from the ground! after further inspection and a few minor burns on my hands...i see that the rubber hanger split in half along the bottom hole. found some bailing wire and looped it around a couple of times to keep it in place. i called borla the next morning and they are sending me a new one. (they were very nice and easy to deal with, got a human being within 30secs.) thank god its under warranty. i bought the kit in feb '09. if it wasn't under warranty it was gonna be about $25! for one little rubber hanger. so now my $700 exhaust looks like crap until i get the new one in the mail. im more pissed because it was a pain to put the orignal on, with everything off the car, let alone now that the whole kit is on the car. sorry, but i can't believe that something like that would break after 6 months. my crappy gibson system on my old jeep lasted much longer with no incident.

has any one else had problems with their Borla exhaust?

Stick with the OEM Toyota system and don't waste your money with untested systems that fail.

ditch the system and just add a muffler. cheaper and u get the sound. (no exhaust IMHO will really get u better mpg as the stock is pretty effecient to begin with) just my .02

I will agree and disagree. It depends which system you have. The OEM system is great, but it would have lasted about 2 minutes on some of the trails I have done.

At a bare minimum, if you offroad, you need to have it modified so it doesn't exit straight out the back or it will eventually get ripped off depending on the terrain you drive.

I have a Magnaflow and it's on sturdier than the stock setup while not being too loud, and it exits out the side so I won't rip it off.

I have the stock exhaust system on my 4R and I notice once after 4-wheel'n that one of the rubber connectors that holds one of the pipe to the hanger was ripped off and just dangling off the pipe. No big deal and it was easy enough to put back on, but something worth mentioning.

Do you have the cat-back setup or just the Magnaflow muffler and outlet? Have you noticed any HP or MPG gains?

Hard to tell with the lift, tires, bumper, etc all working against me.

I had the same thing happen to me. The left hanger that holds up the tail pipe broke within 1 year of the install and the right was about to go when left broke. The tail pipe never hit the ground so there was no damage. I just put 2 new hangers on that my brother got from the dealer he works at.

man, i can think of alot of more important things to vent about. when i called borla about a replacement , they said its do to people just forceing the mounts onto the hanger without first greasing the the holes. you gotta admit it is hard to push on, & i did notice a very slight tear when i installed it, but yes, on the one that tore, i didnt use grease , just forced it on dry.hey,no big deal, if one breaks just get another from the auto store, it may not look exactly the same but it works. hell, you can even make your own. as far as lookin like crap, even if you used a wire coat hanger (yea, like nobodys done that) until ya get a new rubber one,( factory ones break too), dont tell me that you can see it when your standing outside the vec. its underneath. if we cant put up with such little things, then maybe we should all just leave our rides completely stock , so there would be nothing to complain about, no one individual style at all. wouldnt that be boring. i know the government would be happy to have us all the same,if they have theyre way, someday we may all be driving yaris , prius, etc. not that theres anything wrong with that. lol

I wouldn't exactly call it a system that fails....I mean the hangar broke.
That said maybe he wants the extra sound, sum added Hp, better aesthetics Imo and a little better mpg maybe, nothing wrong with that.

:iagree::iagree: Most things we do to our rides don't need to be done or are ever significant to it's performance (some are). we just do them because we enjoy the work and get satisfaction from having something slightly different from the toyota cookie cutter. Kudos to anyone willing to try someething different.

I have the Borla Exhaust from the factory and have 33K on it and I love it. I'm not sure if the dealer installed any diffrent than you did but I have had no problems so far. We all bought a Toyota because they make great trucks right? So... If they put Borla exhaust on from the factory in the XS-P package then I gotta hope they picked a good one. Just a thought.

FYI, some rubber exhaust hangers are available with chains inside the rubber.
For my Volkswagens, I always use these chain re-enforced hangers and have never, ever, had this problem.
You might want to consider buying hangars like these if they are available for your exhaust.
They cost a few more $$$ than the rubber only versions but I have found it is well worth it.

well the new hanger came in the mail on friday and got it all back together this morning.
thanks for all the input. i know its always a debate between muffler shops or aftermarket kits, but i really love the sound of the borla, the throttle response, and the look. i love when people hear me coming and do a double take because the sound is coming from a 4runner and not some rednecks truck. yes i probably over reacted but i spend a lot of time and money taking care of my 4runner and i take a lot of pride in my car and i take it hard when something breaks or malfuntions.

The XSP package isn't from the factory. It's done at the port and by SET at port and only available through that region and dealers, I believe. The XSP wasn't offered nationwide.

Mine did the same thing, but it was in the form of an exhaust rattle. Sure enough, hangar split. Replaced with non-Borla, later split again. My friend who has an exhaust shop welded them to the frame, problem solved! Then I started hearing an exhaust leak. Upon inspection, the flange where the system clamps to the cat was loose and couldn't be tightened. Removed and inserted flex pipe. Now, the exhaust works as it should. I think too much effort was made to have the system "user installed" I know the warranty is voided, but I don't really care because it works. I was getting real frustrated as well until I got everything tightened up.

an update

just to keep everyone updated. about a week ago the same rubber hanger ripped again. Called Borla and they are sending me a new rear rubber hanger. If it wasn't under warranty still I would have just taken it to an exhaust shop and had them rig something up or use a metal reinforced rubber hanger. I think if it breaks a 3rd time im gonna go nuts! Oh well. not life ending. just very inconveinent and not something i wanted to do for a second time. :redbrick:

You must have one of the rear pipes mis-aligned. 3 years an no problem with mine - other than too loud at cruising speed (1500-2000 RPMs). I'd loosen the connection on the one that keeps breaking and twist it up or down to relieve the strain. I actually thought the mounting donuts were Toyota products. I'd use silicon spray/grease and not petroleum based grease (which eats rubber) when mounting. The Borla warranty is for 1M miles so you still have a way to go!

I noticed on the Borla FAQ that they don't warrant thte sound - if its too loud they mention adding a venturi. They don't asppear to sell the venturis though. Anyone tried it? Does in wedge in pipe like befgore the muffler or does it need to be welded in? Who makes them - guess I'll try JEGS and Summit Racing.

I love the look of the dual side exiting dual pipes and the quality of the system. Also perceived extra power and hope of better fuel economy BUT a long 16 hjr trip one way is planned and the droning gets on your nerves.
