Hey guy. Some of you may remember me from a couple years back when I was wrenching on my '86.
Well just as so many other members here that come and go I ended up getting in a tight spot, needed a bigger vehicle for my growing family and had to ditch the vehicle that sat in the yard more than was driven. I ended up trading it for a 2002 Ford Expedition. I needed 3 rows and the ability to tow my boat.
Well that truck has since blew a head gasket and passed on to the scrap yard. I now drive a 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty crew cab. Plenty of room for the family and will tow whatever. I actually was using it for work towing a 14' trailer with my tools, I am a flooring contractor. Well I was a flooring contractor. With all these new health care laws and such here in the wonderful USofA I've had to go back to work as a employee of a big corporation. Not the worse move ever as it's much less stressful then owning my own business and I get great benefits.
But this has led to a 45 minute drive from home to the shop. At 11-13 MPG in my Soupie Doodie (that's what I call her) it's become time for me to find something more economical. Now I could go buy a Honda Civic or Toyota Prius but that's just not how I roll. I'm a truck guy!!! I've looked at a few small pickups (Toyotas, Mazda, Nissan etc) but I can't help but keep searching for 4Runners. I don't want to sound like a pansy but believe it or not I got choked up getting rid of my old one. I had a lot of blood sweat and tears in it and out of the dozens and dozens of vehicles I've owned it was definitely the hardest to part with. So it just felt right for me to find another one.
Well this gem popped up online this morning, FB Marketplace to be exact.
She's a 1986, 5spd, 22re, fully loaded, sunroof, inclinometer, A/C truck. The owner said it needs a head gasket and he bought all the parts to do it including timing parts and head studs but is in a bind and needs cash. He had one guy in front of me coming to see it and he just notified me he flaked out so if I want it I can come get her.
He's asking $1500 and said he's not budging on price as he's got plenty of people lined up, and frankly I don't blame him even with the motor problems. He said the interior is 9/10. Everything works and the only rust is of course around the wheel arches, easy fix. I'm gonna take the trailer and go see it in the morning and unless there's something way wrong with it, not including the motor, it will come home with me.
Hopefully he won't back out or sell to someone earlier as we set up an 11am meet. If it falls through though I plan on keeping the hunt going. Coincidentally I'm working out of town for the next 2 weeks so I don't absolutely need a gas sipper now so if I need more time I'll have it. I got a budget of around $3000 so I should be able to find something else if this falls through. I'd even consider a decent second gen.
Anyways good to be back posting. I've been stopping in and seeing what everyone's up to but haven't had much to say since I've been 4Runner-less. Hopefully that'll be in the past tomorrow morning.
