Went Down the Rabbit Hole - Here's what I'm doing

I appreciate that Jon. Thanks! I'll give you and anyone reading my post an example of the time that goes into making a video of an involved repair or mod. The Timing Belt Video [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and I made took 2 full days to film. I always start the editing process by going through the clips getting the content and flow I'd like to see in the videos we make. For the timing belt video, this took me around 17 hours. I handed the project over to Sean and he spent another 10-15 hours polishing up the video making it much nicer to view.



Now, we make money from our channel but we are still a long way off from being adequately compensated for the time we put into it. First and foremost, we started this channel to help people out and the money we are making is just a fringe benefit. And, I don't feel guilty about making money from our channel because the money is coming from the Advertisers and not from the people watching our videos. We would never charge people for access to our videos. But guess what? We have received complaints about the ads that are played on our videos. So, speaking of being spoon fed and wanting everything for free, this really annoys the shit out of me. Instead of thanking Sean and I for making a video for them to use to fix, maintain or mod their rig, they complain about the ads and that's the extent or their comment. Since I have no problem speaking my mind, I hammer these people and give them a little dose of reality that we didn't have to make this video for them to use. They are benefiting from our generosity and all they have for us is a complaint or talking shit to us.



On a side note, we literally have people who subscribe to our channel just so they can give a thumbs down to every video we post. We know this because we'll post a long video, say 45 minutes long, and within the first 5 minutes the video is live, we get a thumbs down. Obviously, I pissed somebody off because I don't take shit from people and I give it right back to them. I guess I should be more like Sean and let negative or a-hole comments roll off my shoulders but it's not the way I'm wired. So, the haters of our channel are most likely due to me.



Anyway, it's people like you Jon that help motivate Sean and I to keep making videos for people to use. Thanks again!

You guys do excellent work. I been a hobby mechanic for close to 30 years. Turning wrenches for close to 40 years. I used Service manuals to fix mine. Now I look for tips from other wrenches to do my projects.

Anyone who contributes to helping others like Tim, Shawn, Gene, The Durk, Charlie, Bad Luck, and countless many good contributors on this forum [many, many others to numerous to mention]. I appreciate all of you big time.

However, I will tolerate rudeness, disrespect and most of all complete laziness from self entitled ego trip type.

Nor do we need that type of behavior on here. This is one of the best forum groups I belong to and we all need to keep it that way.

Well in my opinion that is.

First of all, OP, sorry for the hijack of your thread. That's not what Jon and I had intended. I don't hold anything against the OP for his opinion of my channel. Like I said, I just don't understand it when we all know there's an option to fast forward through videos. I do it all the time. But, when I find a good video, I'll sit there and watch it to learn everything I need to know about the job. When it comes time to perform the job, I'll have my laptop open, watch a part of the video, pause the video and perform that step and continue on in that fashion. I've serviced the front fork and rear shock on my mtn bike this way. I did the same when I needed to fix my clothes dryer.

There's people who prefer write-ups over videos and that's another thing I don't exactly get because a write-up is two-dimensional while a video is three-dimensional. There is just no comparison, but hey, to each his own.

So anyway, I don't believe the OP was being disrespectful or ungrateful towards me or anyone else trying to help him out in this thread. But, in my previous response to you Jon, there have been and will continue to be a-holes and haters that we will come across on our channel and luckily they are an exception to the rule.

If you're going to pull the spindle and press the bearing out why not weld Total Chaos spindle gussets or etc. on then? The spindle is a weak point in a 3rd gen 4runner when offroading and would greatly take care of the possibility of it breaking.

Tim... I recently did all or most of my front end rebuild. I did wheel bearings, both top and lower control arm bushings, upper and lower balljoints, stabilizer links. I did it all by using all your videos and helfull hints and from lots of reading on this forum. But mostly your youtube videos was the most helpfully to me. I did this in my spare time in my drive way on jacks. Took me while but learned a lot and save $$$ big time.. Tim, keep up the great videos. But for DIY guy like me, your videos was the key to fixing my toyota 4runner.

My next job is chasing a code 420 and leaking valve cover gasket.

Lots of people talk, not many do the hard work needed. I just wish there were other youtube channel like yours for my other cars..

To OP.... The hardest part was the hub removal even with 20 ton press, it was super tuff to the point where I though hub was going to explode under that pressure, it wouldn't give till I torched the hub and this is a socal car, rust free. Include fact that there's not much hub meat support point to hold hub right when pressing it out.

Well, that's our style. We make very detailed videos that a total beginner can be successful following. If we aimed our videos at experienced professional mechanics or experienced DIY mechanics, we would be leaving a whole lot of people behind. The information is all there in the videos we have for the jobs you want to do but maybe you can find some videos with trimmed down versions. But, when you get stuck and want more detail, you know where to go.

No doubt, you cant make everyone happy. Your videos have helped a ton, especially the detail about torque specs and tools.

Not to get off topic but I like your videos I just wish some moments were quicker to the point. No reason to change what youre doing and im not asking you to. Since you mentioned your videos theres my feedback. But know that I get a ton of information in them. I dont fast forward because between the hangtime, there might be a detail im looking for. You have a video for every single thing Im doing, which I've added dropping the trans pan and reaplcing the filter.

Tim people want everything spoon fed and exact answer to their specific question for free. Nevermind using a factory service manual and educating yourself on how things work as we done for years and actually appreciate other assistance and experience in past repairs.

However, if it takes too much time to do this. Maybe it's best for The OP to pay a garage to do it for them. This way they wont be spending so much time with popcorn as in their opinion your videos are too long.

I am really getting tired people complaining about other people trying to help them with their vehicles issues. Gosh we take our time to comment and help for free for goodness sake.

However, this is my opinion on that subject matter.

All the videos I have seen were very well done and those take quite a bit a time to create. Most of our community is grateful for them. I appreciate them if I need to do something I never done before. Keep up the great work.

Jeesus, Brillo, Tim, no need to get defensive. A. I dont need anything spoon fed. I just want the quick details. No one is asking Tim to make videos for me. They are just a little long sometimes and I told him what I appreciated about them.

B. just as you have your opinion, I have mine. HE mentioned his videos on my thread, to be helpful yes, and I gave my thoughts on my thread. Wasnt intended to be malicious so not sure why youre getting offended for Tim. Or why Tim is for that matter. It's just a matter of fact. Not once did I ask Tim to change.

I've swapped motors, boosted engines, rewired harnesses. Tim's videos are just as they should be, I'm not his intended audience.

With your s/c consider need/desire for fuel mods/exhaust (headers/cat/etc). I ran a new s/c for >10 years with no other mods and it was fine...eventually the rear bearings went bad and I had it rebuilt then upgraded a bunch of stuff for its next life. Not saying you need to do anything but slap it on (assuming it is new) and enjoy but think about it. If it is used, what mileage?...might a need an oil change, nose cone rebuild or full rebuild.

I would encourage you to buy the typical harbor freight press when it goes on sale. For the cost and PITA of taking your spindles somewhere to have your front wheel bearings replaced...and lets just add in your rear because if they haven't been done yet they will likely need it soon you will have paid for the press. It isn't particularly hard work, just a bit tedious. Also, it will make your lower control arm bushing job easier as well a countless other future projects.

I did buy it new, just for mild gains. When and If i replace or rebuild the engine I might consider at least injectors and programming, any fuel mod and other mods aside from headers and exhaust.

I really enjoyed the way you did the front bumper video removing your own front bumper for demonstration purposes because ?name had already removed theirs so could not be videod. I like them all the bumper one just as an example to as why.

Dont like the length fast forward.
Dont like the music in a video mute button works.
Dont like the channel change it.
Dont like my comments dont read them.

Yeah no one is asking for tips to watch Tims videos so not sure why ANYONE is showing up to defend Tim. No one is taking his videos down and this isnt ultimate judgemnet

It's a major problem across all forums. Everyone wants everything instant . So many wont use the search nor take the time learn how to search for things.

I starting to believe that it's a society issue anymore as how things changed. Because tv, music and movies are now instant.

30 years ago. The internet wasnt readily available to answer specific questions. We basically used the Factory Service Manuals and did all we could before asking a mechanic or someone else more knowable on the subject then ourselves.


Today its great that its available but so much lost at the same time. Lots of folks lost the ability to troubleshoot and fix things on their own because YouTube shows them how.

What's going to happen if the forum is dead for a week or the internet just doesn't function?

Some of us get grumpy because well were getting old..

So dont mind me. I just know what goes on for Tim to produce his videos. Just like how much time it takes for people to do write ups to help others.

Lots of us even keep the comments or post short here because users are too lazy to read the entire messages. I had conversations with other contributors about that as well.

So do I feel better to answer question no I dont . However, Its no from my life spilling over into the forum.
