Wet carpet

Been having a mildew smell in my vehicle the past week that has only gotten worse. Finally had time today to investigate and the floor behind the drivers seat is very wet. I don't have a sunroof. I checked all the weather stripping on that side and it all looks as good as new. Not sure if this is common or not? How do I get rid of the wetness and hopefully the moldy smell? I'm guessing the pad is wet underneath.

Correction, the carpet on the drivers side front is wet as well. It does not look like I am leaking coolant and it doesn't have any smell to it other than mildewy. Not sure where this could be coming from. I just got weathertech mats so I know it's not from getting in and out of the truck.
 
I've read about similar problems being caused by bad windshield seals. Some worn over time, some from poorly installed replacement windshields.

My windshield is original. Not sure why it would all of a sudden have a leak. Where would it leak from if that was the issue?
 
There are probably a couple of threads that would be able to better describe it. I'm going from memory. If I remember right, it was coming down right at the kick plate. I could be remembering incorrectly though.
 
Hmm... Yeah, that could be the windshield seal; seems weird it just starts leaking now though I guess?

I would remove the driver's side kick panel under the dash and get a flashlight and see if you can notice water droplets or evidence of water intrusion from the A-pillar/Firewall area looking up into the dash.

yep, thats happened to me, that is why i asked the op if the seatbelt was wet. mine was wet and so was the floor. ended up being the roof rack bolt grommets.
 
Ok so I just tore the carpet back to hopefully dry it out before mold starts. The front carpet padding was definitely wet, but not nearly as wet as the padding directly behind the drivers eat. That was soaked. I did not notice my seat belt being wet or having any moisture. Also I park on a slight hill where I'm facing up and therefore any water that comes in is naturally going to run to the rear, making this harder to diagnose. I took a picture of the foot well which looks pretty dry, didn't see any water spots or wetness anywhere up in there, it seems like all of the water was pretty much under the floor. I'm running an electric heater inside the truck right now pointed at a lot of the wet carpet that has been pulled back over the rear seat.

Same Issue.

I currently have the same issue...I can't pinpoint where the leak is coming from at all. It's soaked pretty badly on the driver side and behind the driver side. My run channel for the tail gate failed and is causing a leak in the rear trunk area, I've parked on the hill nose down for the past couple of days and it's been raining non-stop here in Georgia, so I thought that was the point of origin but it can't be as it's only wet on the driver side and the passenger side is perfectly dry. So I resorted to removing the carpet lining in the main area and trunk area and line everything with my weathertech mats.
 
Have you had someone pour water on various areas to see if you can mimic the leak and catch the source? That was my plan for the weekend but not sure if it's going to work.
 
pull the a pillar cover off. lets see if the water is coming in from higher up.

also stick your hands up and go behind the headliner up top next to windshield. see if water in coming in but running down the headliner to the drivers a pillar. the headliner should be damp if it is.

the a pillars will tell us if the water is indeed coming in from the roof rack holes. since you will see water line inside the back of the a pillar.

i see the water line creeping up the vent that runs down from the center console. is water is coming in, trying to see if it is coming in from the front or the rear.

pop the hood also and look at the grommit that goes from engine compartment into the cabin that on the drivers side below the brake booster. see if thats still in place
 
is Pilkington an aftermarket windshield??

Interesting this thread came up. I've had an issue with wetness under the drivers side front carpet. I've read about the issues with leaks following a windshield replacement. I didn't know if mine had that before I bought it. Looking at the windshield it's labeled Pilkington in the lower right corner. Are those aftermarket?? If so I can see I probably ought to pull the A pillar cover and look for evidence of leaks around the seal.

If I try to lift the outer surround (people have mentioned there are factory holes in the gasket that an get uncovered after a WS replacement), will I be able to put it back? Just wondering if an inspection will lead directly to replacing that outer surround....
 
When I had this problem on a Dodge truck I removed the entire interior. Then had the wife use low pressure water hose to simulate rain. Found the front windshield leaking at multiple points. With carpet out, I steam cleaned then hung it in the sun.

I also pulled the interior in a Ford Explorer to steam clean.
 
Yea definitely no coolant smell and my coolant level hasn't moved at all. I'm going to pull the pillar and keep that open when I do the water test on Friday. Finally got all the padding dried out and there is no mildew smell so I think I caught it in time. Thanks for all the advice thus far.
 
New to the forum so do not know the source of the leak, but I found that placing charcoal (like for BBQ) in the car for a few days will reduce the smell in a car.
