What air filter is best? K&N, OEM / Stock, AFE, ect?

like the title say i just wanting in put on what air filter people trust but might be better then the OEM / Stock one.

I have a 2000 4runner and oreded a K & N. but after reading up more people have said they cause problems.

This is general question.

Depends on your priorities. If you really need to move more air and have the other engine mods to use it, a high flow filter might be of use. But more air equals more dirt and there's no way around that, so if engine reliability and longevity are a concern, stick with an oem style paper filter. I like NAPA gold, but any quality filter will do.

There's been several previous threads on the topic, complete with yahoos insulted that somebody doesn't like their awesome 50hp cone filter and ready to fight about it. A little searching will get you all the head to head tests and other-mens-opinions you could want.

As was pointed out above, more flow = less filtration. Typically most manufacturers try to work around this with oiled filters, but honestly I'd stay away from them.

In my experience I have seen more MAF problems because of K&N Filters and other oiled filters than anything else in my years. I would say something like 90% of the time I see vehicles with DTCs for MAFs its because they're running a K&N Style filter. Most people either don't oil their filters at all or properly (which means even less dirt filtration) or are over oiling them (extremely easy to do), which leads to the MAFs getting dirty and over time failing.

They don't offer you that much gain in horsepower and require regular oiling. If you are dead seat on an aftermarket filter, I would probably look at like an AFE Dry Filter.

Stock from Toyota if you care about keeping dirt and dust out of your engine. I've never been to Washington state but here in the southwest where we have LOTS of sand and fine dust anything less than a quality paper filter is asking for long term trouble.

I had a K&N in my Super Duty Diesel and the stupid thing sucked so hard that it pulled the filter into a cone and broke the seal. It went into the trash right away. They may work ok in some applications but I wouldn't use one again on anything of mine. Just my 2 cents worth.

Got a k&n drop in filter in my runner. Really no difference except better gas mileage. I have looked at the throttle body after 10k miles of mixed dusty off road driving and highway driving and the throttle body was/is still shiny clean.

I hear Amsoil makes a ' nano-fiber' filter or something to that effect, thats better than paper or oiled cotton gauze. IIRC they were/are used by the military in Afghanistan/Iraq. I've used a K&N for years in my Toyotas and Jeeps. Never had any problems. Never found any dust in the intake tubes. Never over oiled them. They hate 'em over on Jeep Forum too... eace:

Unless you plan on upgrading the entire airflow system (intake, headers, exhaust) I doubt you'll see a lot of noticeable difference above OEM style. Unless you move to an oiled filter that f*cks up your MAF and gunks up the intake.

If u do get the Amsoil filter, let us know what u think. I'm considering one for a couple of my vehicles. AMSOIL - Synthetic Oil, Motor and Engine Oil, Lubricants, Air Filters, Oil Filters and Greases
Scroll down the page you'll find a cross-reference page. Put in your part # and it tells u which Amsoil filter fits ur app.

Just looked at that pic of ur MAF. That did not look good. Is it possible the seal around the sensor wasn't all that good? How did the rest of the intake tube look? On another note, are there any military guys, who served in Afghanistan/Iraq, who can confirm or deny the use of Amsoil filters there?

Everything was sealed properly for certain. those screws arent stripped and the o ring is in good shape. There was dust like that all the way to the butterfly valve in the throttle body. out:

On that other note, i'm over here now. i can check to see whats standard issue on rigs over here.
